Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros. Shipping with Language Error

Nintendo is releasing the brand-new Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros. system on November 13 to celebrate the game’s 35th anniversary. While many are likely excited for this Super Mario Bros. release, the company apologized for an unexpected language error in the system.

The error pertains to the Game and Watch‘s digital clock, which displays the wrong lyrics for a specific song when it’s playing in certain languages. The original Game and Watch system was Nintendo’s first handheld game device, and this version will be releasing with the classic Super Mario Bros. and more features including the digital clock. Unfortunately, the new Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros.’ language error will be present on all systems when it releases.

Nintendo announced the Game and Watch will have not only Super Mario Bros., but the digital clock, Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, and a Mario-themed version of the handheld’s main title Ball. The language error comes in the digital clock, which plays 35 different animations along with guest appearances from other characters in the Mario franchise. When the game plays the ‘Mario Drawing’ song, vocalized in English, it displays the wrong lyrics in a number of different languages.

The song displays the wrong lyrics for German, French, Italian, and Spanish languages, if those are selected from the title screen. However, the English, Dutch, and Japanese languages still play the correct lyrics. Nintendo apologized for the inconvenience and noted that languages can be switched at any time when the song is playing, but said the launch will go on as planned.

Nintendo’s statement doesn’t provide details on how the language error occurred to begin with, but the company is adamant that the error won’t affect the Game and Watch system launch. For the time being, players will have to adjust the language settings when the ‘Mario Drawing’ song is playing in the game. Evidently, Nintendo is confident the error won’t hurt sales of the gaming device in the wake of the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary.

The company has been pulling out all the stops to celebrate the anniversary with a series of major Mario releases. This includes Super Mario Bros. 35, a battle royale on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit on the Switch, the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, and the upcoming Switch port of Super Mario 3D World on February 12, 2021. It remains to be seen if the Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros. language error will be fixable in the future.
