How Bayonetta 3 Could Benefit From Being on the Switch Hardware

Platinum Games’ upcoming Bayonetta 3 is following suit with the last game in the system, being produced by Nintendo and launching exclusively on the publisher’s current gaming console. So, even though the current state for development of Bayonetta 3 is still undetermined, with the developer recently and simply assuring players that it is coming, all most players know now is that it’s coming to Switch.

That being said, looking at the previous games in the series, Bayonetta 3 may see some impressive benefits releasing on the Switch instead of expanding to more platforms. Not only will being developed solely for the Switch allow Platinum Games to make sure that the developer can make proper use of the system’s built in features, as well as possibly have a better chance at success that it did on the previous console.

One major thing that didn’t help the success of Bayonetta 2 was the relative lack in success of the WiiU console that may have been Nintendo’s worst selling console in decades. Fortunately for Bayonetta 3, the Switch has broken sales records all over the world, meaning that the upcoming release will have a massive head start against the previous title. However, selling the game on one of the most successful systems of the modern generation isn’t the only advantage that the Switch can give the new Bayonetta, as Platinum Games also has a host of new features to play with on the new console.

A key feature of the Bayonetta series is the incredibly stylized combat and special finishers that add a little flair to defeating everything from ordinary enemies to epic god-like bosses. Considering the suggestive nature of the game and these finishers, utilizing the HD Rumble found in the Switch’s Joycon controllers could give Bayonetta 3 the most memorable action in the series. Of course, this could lead to some less impressive design choices, like an increased emphasis on motion controls, or an emphasis that could work better on either the Joy-con or the Pro controller.

That being said, Platinum Games’ popular Switch title Astral Chain does prove that the developer isn’t prone to getting caught up in gimmicks or getting lost in the form vs function issues of motion controls. However, this doesn’t mean that motion controls don’t have a place in a game like Bayonetta 3 at all, as sometimes using the physical motions as a part of the series’ climax finishers could add an extra level of immersion to the game. It can be the smaller details that could really make this next entry in the series stand out, taking advantage of the Switch’s new controls, as well as other improved features on Nintendo’s flagship console.

Nintendo has had online accessibility since the original Wii, something that the company continued to improve on with the WiiU and various handheld DS consoles. This improvement has eventually led to the Switch now having the best connectivity, with a newly improved Nintendo Eshop and an enhanced online presence powered by the Nintendo Online service. So, while Bayonetta may not be a traditionally multiplayer title, the next title might have the best opportunity for online features than any other games in the series.

This could take the form of allowing players to tackle specified challenges for multiplayer that aren’t usually available in single-player modes. However, a better option could be the option for full multiplayer throughout the story, as well as the ability to take on Destiny 2 or Ghost of Tsushima Legends styled raids and missions. It may be asking for a lot to see Bayonetta 3 make an impact in online gameplay, but seeing the titular character in a multiplayer setting could be a fantastic way to cap off the series.

Bayonetta 3 is currently in development for Switch.
