Jordan Peele’s Next Movie Has a Release Date Reserved

These days, the only certainties in life are death, angry boys on YouTube, and always another Jordan Peele movie. Universal has already reserved a release date for Peele’s largely unknown next film, proving that they know where the money is. In typical fashion, Peele himself has yet to reveal any concrete details about the upcoming project. It is currently unclear whether the film in question is the same as Peele’s upcoming remake of Wes Craven’s The People Under The Stairs.

After the success of his previous horror films, Get Out and Us, it’s only natural that the studio would be willing and eager to plan ahead like this. Like Marvel laying out its years-long plan for its releases, Universal knows a safe bet when they see it, and they have no problems doubling down. Considering Peele’s previous films together brought in an impressive $510.5 million worldwide, this strategy seems to be grounded particularly well.

Taking July 22, 2022 as the unnamed film’s currently projected release date, Universal may not have gone as out of their way on this decision as one might think. The chosen date had already been picked up by the studio, just without any particular movie in mind. Frankly, the idea of studios hoarding future release dates like health potions in Dragon Age feels oddly relatable.

2017’s Get Out rocketed Peele from funny stardom to horror stardom practically overnight, with its poignant exploration of social issues and almost uncomfortably pointed humor. Becoming a cultural phenomenon on a few levels, it was almost inevitable that Peele’s next film, 2019’s Us, would be seen as lacking by many who praised his directorial debut. That’s not to say it was received poorly or was a bad film. It was the opposite, in fact, receiving largely positive reviews and raking in plenty of cash on its own. It’s just that following up a milestone like Get Out will always hit differently, even when a director like Peele puts just as much passion into both projects. (By the way, the release year of Us isn’t a typo. It really did release in 2019, even though it feels like a decade ago.)

After the overwhelming success of Peele’s previous works, it will be exciting to see what he has in store next. Even many who aren’t generally horror fans were drawn to his unique takes on the genre, so that crossover appeal could really work some wonders as he continues putting out auteur projects like he’s been doing. Whether the new film hits the same grooves as the previous two remains to be seen, but it’s probably safe to say it will be something special in one way or another.

Once again, the upcoming movie (whatever it is) is set for a July 22, 2022 release, so mark those calendars, because the idea of anything beyond the year 2020 sounds rather nice.
