Rocket League became one of the premier multiplayer games of this generation, and the fun continues on the next gen. The now free-to-play title launches this week for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 with next-gen upgrades to make it fire on all cylinders.
The first bit of good news is that your Rocket Pass inventory and progression carries over to next-gen versions via your Epic Games Account. That’s great, given the sheer amount of cars and cosmetics to hit the game over the years.
A post on the game’s official blog breaks down the graphical and performance features for each console. While next-gen Rocket League boasts faster load times and better split-screen performance across the board, each platform has its own individual performance differences:
PlayStation 5: Rocket League will feature 4K resolution (checkerboard) with HDR at 60 FPS at launch. That’s pretty much it.
Xbox Series X: Like the PS5, it sports 4K resolution at 60 FPS with HDR at launch. However, an update coming later this year will add a “Video Quality” feature allowing players to choose between emphasizing game quality or performance. Selecting Quality maintains the aforementioned visual/performance specs. The Performance option bumps the game to 120 FPS with HDR but knocks the resolution down to 2688×1512, or roughly 70% of full 4K.
Xbox Series S: 1080p resolution with HDR at 60 FPS at launch and will also receive the Video Quality feature. The Performance setting runs Rocket League at 120 FPS with HDR by dropping the resolution to 1344×756 or 70% of full 1080p. Quality maintains the default resolution setting.
Rocket League is available now for Xbox Series X/S and November 12 for PlayStation 5. Check out our review of the game here. Andrew Reiner also wrote a great opinion piece discussing how Rocket League became a welcome escape during the pandemic.
