Xbox Series X Consoles Being Sold at Insane Prices By Scalpers

It’s officially Xbox Series X launch day, and some gamers are still looking for their chance to snag a new console. As with any hot new item, some are buying up stock to resell at absurd prices online. Third-party sellers on Amazon are currently selling Xbox Series X consoles for prices in the thousands.

For veterans of previous console launches, this might seem familiar. Online scalpers tried to take advantage of the scarce PlayStation 3 back in 2006, and this year’s Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics cards were similarly scalped. On the more legitimate side of things, most retailers offer expensive bundles when they’ve run out of lone systems. Even so, the bundles are generally cheaper than what scalpers want.

Based on the Xbox Series X‘s store page on Amazon, gamers can get their hands on a console for around $1,300. That’s nearly triple its retail price, and without any games or accessories. To reiterate, these overpriced systems do not come from Amazon directly, so while some offer free shipping they are not Prime eligible. While retailer bundles can be ridiculous in terms of price, at the very least they come with games, extra controllers, or other goodies.

Both Xbox and PlayStation have had their hiccups this cycle. Just today, Walmart made a limited number of Xbox consoles available online, but ran out quickly. The retail giant will have a similar offering for the PS5 beginning at 12:00 p.m. on the system’s launch day, November 12.

Even folks who were lucky enough to go through with a preorder have hit some setbacks. Some customers have reported that their confirmed Xbox Series orders might not arrive until Christmas. Exacerbating the stress on online retailers is the limited, or complete lack of, in-store availability. This cycle’s unprecedented circumstances put more stress on online ordering systems and delivery infrastructure.

Health and safety are the foremost concerns in the COVID era. As a consequence, the days of camping outside a store to grab one of the precious few systems are likely behind us. GameStop announced that its stores will have Xbox Series X and PS5 systems in-store on Black Friday. But this year, customers will have to consider their own health and safety when considering whether to try their luck at getting one. It’s a messy situation all around, for retailers and gamers alike. Perhaps patience is the best medicine, for now.

The Xbox Series X is now available.
