With the rise of digital purchases this past generation, both Xbox and PlayStation made game sharing easy on the Xbox One and PS4, respectively. For the uninitiated, game sharing is when players allow their accounts to be tied to someone else’s system and vice versa. So for example, this means a pair of friends can purchase one copy of a digital game and both of them will have complete and uninterrupted access to it (assuming they can maintain an internet connection).
Luckily, game sharing is back for both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. And now that Microsoft has officially launched the Xbox Series X, some early adopters may be wondering how they can active game sharing on their new console.
Here is how Xbox Series X game sharing works and how to activate it.
To game share on Xbox Series X, players need to sign in as the account that will be the one purchasing the games, but will primarily be using a different Xbox. That account needs to navigate to Settings, then click General, then Personalization. The bottom option should say “My Home Xbox,” at which point players will be able to assign that Xbox Series X as their home console.
- Settings
- General
- Personalization
- My Home Xbox
Xbox fans should note that they can change which console is designated as their home Xbox up to five times in a single calendar year. So if there is a falling out with someone that a player is game sharing with, they should be able to rescind it. Or if an Xbox Series X happens to break down, which is unlikely, players should be able to designated their replacement console as their home Xbox without any trouble.
Note that these steps also apply to the Xbox Series S console as well.
Some Xbox users who aren’t traded in their original Xbox One systems may be concerned about losing their game sharing on their older consoles. Based on our own testing, game sharing on Xbox Series X has no impact on Xbox One game sharing. So users should be free to game share on their Xbox Series X consoles without having to worry about losing access on any of the Xbox One consoles that they may be game sharing on.
This is great news for Xbox gamers who are still holding on their Xbox One consoles, to say the least.
