With less than 2 weeks until World of Warcraft: Shadowlands releases, players can now participate in the long-awaited pre-patch event. The consequences of Sylvanas breaking the Lich King’s helm are finally taking effect as the mindless undead run rampant across Azeroth once more. While most of the world is fighting back this returning threat, heroes will need to assault the renewed Scourge presence in Northrend.
Although most of the high-ranking Scourge were previously defeated in Wrath of the Lich King, Bolvar’s recent defeat has allowed the Jailer’s forces to usurp control and bring them back to life. During Death’s Rising, players will find many familiar undead bosses spawning as rares in the Icecrown zone. Killing these old foes once more will give event currency as well as raid-level gear and other special items.
Before players can see the rare spawns, they must first do a short intro questline for Death’s Rising that begins in Stormwind or Orgrimmar. Afterwards, everyone will get a side quest to confront Nathanos Blightcaller, but also ‘A Message From Icecrown’ that directs them to the Argent Tournament Grounds. The quickest way to get there will be taking the portal to Northrend’s Dalaran and then flying over. Note that players don’t have to do any of the follow-up or dailies after turning in the quest.
Every 20 minutes, a rare elite will appear followed by a zone-wide emote saying ‘Winged figures appear through the shattered sky and call upon <X> to rise again!’ followed by ‘<X> returns, infused with dark magic!’ Players have 2 minutes to fly over where the rare is before it becomes attackable. There are 20 different rares that will follow the specific order below before repeating.
- Blood Queen Lana’thel
- Professor Putricide
- Lady Deathwhisper
- Skadi the Ruthless
- Ingvar the Plunderer
- Prince Keleseth
- The Black Knight
- Bronjahm
- Scourgelord Tyrannus
- Forgemaster Garfrost
- Marwyn
- Falric
- The Prophet Tharon’ja
- Novos the Summoner
- Trollgore
- Krik’thir the Gatewatcher
- Prince Taldaram
- Elder Nadox
- Noth the Plaguebringer
- Patchwerk
Every rare can be looted once per day and has a small chance to drop ilvl 110 weapons or armor which is on par with gear from N’Zoth in Ny’alotha. Note that all rares have a rare chance to drop an Accursed Keepsake which sometimes spawns a ghost. Specific rares may also give items like bags and mounts to lucky players.

While most of the community won’t need this gear on their main characters, it does offer a guaranteed way to quickly gear up alts when combined with the ilvl 100 gear that can be purchased from Argent Crusade vendors. Any heroes fully decked out in Death’s Rising gear should last through most of the Shadowlands leveling experience before replacing anything and getting their Covenant powers.
World of Warcraft is available on PC. World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will launch on November 23rd.
