EVE Online Donates to COVID-19 Relief Efforts | Game Rant

It has been a busy year for many, and busier than most for EVE Online players. It’s been an exciting time to play the game, for more reasons than just the recent double Guinness World Record achievements.

If any game could be said to be almost run by its players, it would be EVE Online. The recent record breaking was the result of a player-driven war that’s been going on for a few months. Beyond that, a major storyline wrapped up in the game, changing the very nature of EVE‘s map. Amid all of that, EVE Online players have been doing their part to help fight COVID-19.

There are a few ways EVE Online players have chipped in to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, players began helping scientists gather data to fight the virus. Now, a round of fundraising through an EVE program called PLEX for GOOD has just wrapped up. Players donated Plex, EVE‘s in-game currency, to raise real money for the charity program, and as a result $135,500 have been accrued since April 3, 2020. This marks one of the most successful fundraising efforts from PLEX for GOOD to date, according to a press release today.

As an organized charity program, PLEX for GOOD has been around since 2005. Over the years it has raised money for various charity projects using the mechanics of EVE Online‘s economy, actually has real-world value. This allows players to contribute in ways that would not normally be possible for them financially. It also allows for outlandish methods of donation, like the sale of a rare spaceship to help the Australian brushfires. The amount raised to fight COVID-19 is second only to the amount raised for Typhoon Haiyan relief in 2013.

Players who have come to know EVE Online through the stories of audacious player wars and backstabbing may be surprised at these gestures of goodwill. Make no mistake, the playerbase of EVE Online makes regular efforts of camaraderie. This was highlighted in a recent interview with EVE‘s developer CCP Games through various events like Chappy’s Birthday Bash and the construction of Molea Cemetery.

The players’ efforts to battle the Coronavirus through the in-game Project Discovery has not slowed either. An interview with scientists working with Project Discovery revealed how player’s efforts are helping compile data essential for COVID-19 research. No doubt further efforts will be made by players, even as they remain shut inside, exploring EVE‘s New Eden.
