Ever since its debut earlier this year, Ghost of Tsushima has been an absolute hit for the teams over at Sucker Punch and Sony. It launched to incredible reviews, was heralded by thousands of fans, and even went on to spawn a cooperative expansion in recent months, with the addition of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends also being greeted with unanimously positive reactions.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan recently claimed the game exceeded all expectations, and if there’s any additional proof to back that statement up, it’s the recent news that the game has passed yet another sales milestone. Revealed in an interview with The New York Times, Ghost of Tsushima has officially sold “more than 5 million copies,” easily making it one of the company’s most successful new IPs to date.
The game has already had quite the history of surpassing expectations, beating out both Horizon: Zero Dawn and Day’s Gone to become Sony’s fast-selling new IP back in July. It’s evidently set to be a big franchise for Sony, with its extraordinary sales figures and fan reactions proving that the epic samurai tale had all the makings of a classic. It already seems as though Sucker Punch is working on a follow-up, with the team recently posting a job listing that teased more Ghost of Tsushima is almost certainly on the way.
For those who somehow missed Ghost of Tsushima’s debut earlier this year, the game follows a young samurai by the name of Jin Sakai, who – after a ruthless invasion by the Mongrel warlord Khotun Khan – is left as one of the only remaining Samurai on Tsushima. Journeying across the island in an attempt to liberate it from its invaders, players get to explore a wide open world filled with battles to wage and authentic locations to explore, as Jin begins to question his own teachings and the importance of the samurai code.
It was seen by many as a fitting send-off to the roster of exclusives developed over the PlayStation 4’s lifecycle, offering a massive experience with some of the most advanced visuals and gameplay the console could muster. It will receive an upgrade on the PlayStation 5, however, with Sucker Punch allegedly upping the graphics and offering 60 frames per second gameplay. Alongside titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Day’s Gone, and Bloodborne, Ghost of Tsushima stands as a strong example of Sony’s push to integrate brand new, innovative franchises into its roster this generation. It seems it’ll become a staple of the PlayStation lineup for years to come.
