Guilty Gear Strive is still quite a ways away, with it releasing in April 2021, so Arc System Works has posted a new Developer’s Backyard — a series of blog posts from the developers — to catch fans up on the latest information.
The newest one primarily focuses on the two playable fighters that will be making their series debut in Guilty Gear Strive: Giovanna, who was announced only last month, and Nagoriyukik, who was teased when Strive was first revealed.
Giovanna, who is a special forces officer working for the President of the United States, is described as a rush-down character, who specializes in close-range combat and fast movement. She’s being billed as a good pick for anyone new to fighting games, though she suffers from having a short range.
The developers also tease a hidden detail about her that many fans spotted in her announcement trailer, where her skin turns green. The blog post doesn’t explicitly say what it is, but it is part of a unique feature for the character, though the developers write that it doesn’t change how she plays or alters her controls.
As for Nagoriyuki, the post reiterates his status as a vampire samurai and explains his role as a heavy hitter with good range, but he lacks a double jump and dash. He’s capable of performing special moves one after another, but this fills up his Blood Gauge. When the gauge is full, he enters a Blood Rage state, which makes him vulnerable to a counter-attack. His command grab can decrease the gauge if a player needs to hold off entering this state.
Though the post covers Giovanna’s background and personality, very little is given on Nagoriyuki, possibly implying that he has a very important role in the game’s story that Arc System Works doesn’t want to reveal too much of yet. More exact details on both characters can be read on the website and fans can look forward to a new demo featuring both characters sometime in early 2021.
The update ends with some fan questions, such as one asking about cross-play between the different versions. Though it reconfirms that cross-play will only be feasible with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions. However, it adds that the team is looking into possibly implementing cross-play for the PC release in the future.
Guilty Gear Strive will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on April 9, 2021.
