Half-Life: Alyx is a lore driven experience, and now players can dig deeper into that lore than ever before with developer commentary. As of the most recent update, players can now find floating headsets throughout the game’s areas that will play off a developer’s commentary whenever they are equipped. In total there are over three hours of audio here spread throughout 147 different points of interest.
Players will see that these clips are just over a minute on average, making them just the right length to where they can explain important information to players without dragging on for too long. Half-Life: Alyx players will find these floating headphones in various locations as they play through the game, and they are of course completely optional.
In order to access these snippets of commentary, players will have to start a brand new save file and enable it before starting. Furthermore, Valve does confirm that there are some significant spoilers tucked away in what the developers are talking about, so players should really wait to use this feature until they’ve completed their first playthrough unless they want to spoil some of Half-Life: Alyx‘s surprises early on.
Apparently, this feature was intended to ship with the game when it released back in March, but restrictions from the Coronavirus pandemic caused it to be put on hold. What’s more, the developers recorded these files from their own homes, so fans shouldn’t be shocked if the audio quality isn’t flawless. Regardless, this does serve as a good incentive to bring people back for one more playthrough of Half-Life: Alyx.
