Following a number of positive COVID-19 tests among production crew members, CBS is halting work on 3 series being produced at CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California. The shutdowns began on Monday, November 9th and are expected to remain in place through at least the end of the week.
The 3 series reportedly facing a pause in production include Why Women Kill, the Apple TV+ hit Mythic Quest, and ABC’s Call Your Mother, which currently has yet to properly premiere on television. Aside from those 3, CBS is also rumored to be delaying an unnamed pilot as well. As the week goes on, CBS plans to resume work on the affected series on a case by case basis.
Talia Robinson, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at CBS Studio Center, notified employees of the situation on Wednesday. Robinson cited Halloween and various other gatherings as one of several reasons for the uptick in cases throughout the area, urging workers to remain cautious and continue observing the health and safety guidelines being proposed by Los Angeles County and the CDC.
Other series affected by the increase in positive tests outside of the CBS Studio Center include CBS’ Young Sheldon, Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla, and NBC’s long running soap opera Days of our Lives. Since the recent spike in cases seems to be affecting the whole country, it makes sense that production companies in general would have to begin closing down, whether voluntarily or otherwise.
Production delays are inevitable, given the circumstances, but others have proven that these shutdowns don’t have to be as crippling to the process as they tend to be. Jurassic World: Dominion, which only just recently completed filming, managed to keep the virus relatively under control while working on the film by essentially putting the entire production in a bubble, keeping the cast and crew together and avoiding any potential outside contamination for the duration of the shoot. Other projects, particularly those filming in New Zealand, have managed similar workarounds.
Regardless of what hindsight has to say, here’s hoping those involved with these series manage to stay safe and healthy during all the chaos, and that hope goes out to everyone else as well. The only way this pandemic will end is through cooperation and effort from everybody, which is apparently easier said than done. However things turn out, safety should be the number one priority. A good binge is always fun, but it can wait.
