Today is the launch day for the PlayStation 5. Sony’s next-generation console arrives on a wave of excitement, as PlayStation fans have been anxiously awaiting this day for over a year, but for some, the wait appears to have ended in disappointment. Some PS5 buyers are sharing news online that their consoles appear to have died already. By no means does there appear to be a widespread or even common issue with the PS5. However, there does appear to be some potential problems with individual PS5 consoles.
The first issue, and perhaps the more worrying, comes from Youtuber ACB. ACB received a review PS5, which they’d been using to make coverage for their channel. Unfortunately, their PS5 appears to have bricked. ACB explains that they were using an external storage device, when his PS5 started delivering warnings saying, “Your storage is corrupted and we have to rebuild it.” This warning apparently was delivered several times before his console completely went dark.
A user on Reddit named Dello512 shared a similar experience, saying that they used a 1TB NVMe extended storage device with their PS5 connected through a rear USB port on the console. Doing this led to “system crashes and corrupts” followed by the PS5 doing “database rebuilds” multiple times. This process worked for the Redditor and their PS5 worked, however, and their PS5 is running. They said they tested it multiple times, and encourage NVMe storage users to use the PS5’s front port, rather than the PS5’s rear ports.
Another example of a bricked console comes from the Youtube channel Omni. Unfortunately, their issue is much more ambiguous. In a short video, they explain that they played through Astro’s Playroom and then shut their console off. When they went to turn their PS5 on again, it didn’t work. It’s completely bricked and the power button doesn’t do anything. It’s possible there may be a more specific problem, perhaps even an external drive, but Omni doesn’t provide any further details.
It deserves to be repeated that these few instances of issues with the PS5 appear to be incredibly rare. There is no evidence of a major PS5 issue causing problems, nor is there evidence that PS5 owners may brick their consoles through typical use of the hardware.
Every single console launch has had its selection of hardware go bad. It’s just the nature of releasing a hugely complicated computer that needs to be delivered across the world. Sometimes the console’s hardware has a bad component, sometimes deliveries break the console, or sometimes there’s a deeper problem that needs to be fixed via a patch. It’s a risk that consumers take whether they’re buying a new iPhone, a new television, or a new PS5. Hopefully, these folk with broken consoles get their problems fixed in a relatively short time.
The PS5 is available now.
