The Outer Worlds’ Typhon Sounds Like a Planet of Monsters

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG-style game that’s full of lore and lots of nods to ancient Greek mythology. The game has already confirmed some Greek myth-inspired areas, like the labyrinth-style prison on the planet Tartarus, so named after the Greek prison found in the Underworld. While not every area or planet in The Outer Worlds has a tie to Greek mythology, those that do paint a clear picture of what gameplay could be like when the planets become available.

The final planet that has yet to be unlocked or given an in-depth look at is Typhon. This planet is located on the edge of the Halcyon map, and it’s quite possible that players may not get access to it at all, even with the Murder on Eridanos DLC slated for release in 2021. If players can access this planet in the future, it’s sure to be full of danger.

According to Halcyon’s map, Typhon is supposedly uninhabited with an icy surface. Players may imagine this landscape as something similar to the ice planet Voeld in Mass Effect: Andromeda, though Angara and Kett did reside on the planet. The map’s description continues, stating that “Typhon has nothing to offer the Halcyon Colony.” This statement suggests that because of its cold landscape, players may not be able to access Typhon throughout the course of the game.

However, players are intimately familiar with how The Board and all the Corporations lie to maintain appearances and fool colonists into believing they operate with the colony’s best interest at heart. The Outer Worlds is very much an insight into what happens when companies and capitalism take over society, so it’s possible that, again, players are being told one thing when another is happening. This would be a very similar story to that of Peril on Gorgon, but not unlikely thanks to The Board’s far-reaching corruption.

Greek mythology presents Typhon, or Typhoeus, as the child of Tartarus and Gaea. Typhon was known as the father of all monsters, which makes sense considering he had one-hundred dragon heads and had many children with Echidna, a half-woman, half-snake. Zeus stopped Typhon with a thunderbolt and sent him to the Underworld for all eternity. As the myth goes, Typhon may still be trapped beneath a volcanic mountain, while other stories say he became the father of “damaging winds,” which is where the word “typhoon” would come from.

While a volcanic mountain isn’t in the description given on the Halcyon map, it does bring up some interesting counterpoints. Though the planet Typhon may be icy and desolate, it’s entirely possible that it’s not as uninhabited as the colonists believe. Given the myth of Typhon, there may be mysterious, powerful, horrendously scary creatures living on Typhon that are waiting to be discovered. Introducing new creatures in the Murder on Eridanos DLC would be extremely interesting, especially when the monsters featured in Peril on Gorgon were just re-skinned versions of Raptidons and Manti-Queens.

This theory could be taken a step further, where some companies in The Board know of the monsters that inhabit Typhon, but have chosen not to tell the colonists any details. Auntie Cleo’s already has a reputation for testing on Raptidons, so it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that they’re also testing their products on whatever animals inhabit the surface of Typhon. Players potentially may not be able to land on the surface of the planet, but there could easily be an orbital Auntie Biotics lab in Typhon’s orbit.

There’s currently no additional information about Typhon or the new Murder on Eridanos DLC, but if the game is still informed by Greek mythology as the other planets have been, players are certainly in for a dangerous ride.

The Outer Worlds is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
