When Sony announced three weeks ago that it had enlisted rapper Travis Scott as a “strategic creative partner” for the PlayStation 5 (PS5), there was an expectation that there would be a merchandise line like Scott’s other collaborations. Besides some Cactus Jack t-shirts and Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Lows, a new colorway of the Travis Scott x Nike SB Dunk Lows was discovered in the announcement advertisement.
As with any article of clothing with Travis Scott’s name on it, there was immediate hype surrounding the new sneakers. So much so that fakes have already been made, though there is serious skepticism over whether they will be anywhere close to the legitimate product. There is also the question of if this particular colorway will be available for retail in the first place. Multiple unreleased colorways of Jordans and Nikes have been spotted in the past being worn by the Houston rapper, real name Jacques Webster II.
Twitter user HypeNeverDies posted an image of multiple fake pairs of the sneakers. While the fakes do have several of the details that the reals will have, namely the reversed Nike Swoosh and the PlayStation logo on the heel, there is an Off-White zip tag attached to the shoe which it probably won’t have on launch. The shoe’s colors are also up for debate, considering the video they were seen in was entirely in black-and-white.
If these sneakers are to be released to the public, expect Sony and Travis Scott to time it with the PS5’s release schedule. The PS5 has launched today in North America and select countries, and will launch on November 19 for the rest of the world. Sony’s latest console is set to be their biggest yet, literally and figuratively, with pre-orders already set to outpace the PS4. Releasing a new line of Travis Scott collaboration gear would most definitely result in it creating even more hype around the PS5.
Surprisingly enough, this particular team up with PlayStation is not Travis Scott’s first video game partnership. The Grammy-nominated rapper previously hosted a concert in Fortnite to an audience of 12 million concurrent players. If Scott is to follow the example he set with his Fortnite concert, expect PlayStation collaboration merchandise to drop soon.
2020 has been a banner year for Travis Scott. His singles, “THE SCOTTS” in collaboration with his idol Kid Cudi and “Franchise” featuring Atlanta rapper Young Thug and British rapper M.I.A. became his third and fourth US number one singles respectively. Scott also wrote a song for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and became the first celebrity since Michael Jordan in 1992 to endorse a McDonald’s meal.
The PlayStation 5 is available now in North America and select countries, and on November 19 for the rest of the world.
