YouTube is one of the most popular and mainstream websites out on the world wide web for both content creators and viewers alike. Because of this, any kind of change or update to YouTube will be noticed immediately no matter how small.
On November 11, 2020, an issue with YouTube was noticed by all. This however wasn’t anything purposeful as it seemed that no videos would play on the website for over an hour for all users worldwide. It being an internal issue was confirmed by YouTube on Twitter at 7:23 pm EST the day of the occurrence.
During the outage, users could still go onto YouTube through their mobile devices, computers, and televisions. However, no video would ever load, with them being stuck on the buffering screen. Some would end in error codes, but many kept buffering until the issue was fixed.
No official reason was given for this mysterious outage. With it affecting users all around the world for an extended period of time, it is worrying to many for why exactly this happened. While some users found their videos playing again around 8:30 PM EST, YouTube didn’t tweet about the problem being fixed until 9:13 PM EST. By this time of course, everyone affected by this issue had their problem solved.
During this incident, many were searching for the reasoning behind the issue while others assumed it was just due to their own internet connection. Those on the search clamored around the DownDetector website in order to find out what exactly was happening. Checking the graph for YouTube on DownDetector reveals over 280,000 user reports on the website’s issues at the time.
Considering how many people were affected and how long it took to definitively fix, it can be certain that this was no small issue for YouTube. At this time it is still unknown if this site outage was due to some kind of internal issue or some kind of outside attack. With YouTube already having fixed it and not commenting on anything further on the matter, it is very unlikely for the public to know about what was behind this halt in viewership.
It is very fortunate that the issue was fixed before the day’s end. At this point, YouTube users can only hope that such an issue won’t affect the website for a long time, especially for those who rely on the website as a means of income.
