How to Factory Reset PS5 | Game Rant

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is now out in the wild, but the thrill of opening a new console is often accompanied by some technical bumps and hiccups. If the next-gen system is misbehaving and turning it on and then off again doesn’t solve the problem, PS5 owners’ next best bet is a factory reset.

Even though Sony’s new console released only yesterday, many users are reporting bugs with the system’s rest mode, and others have run into problems with the system’s download queue. A factory reset may be able to help with some of these problems and other technical issues players encounter. Before performing the reset though, players should back up all of their most recent saves to an external hard drive or the PS Plus cloud service, as the reset will wipe all data from the system’s hard drive.

Fortunately, the process is fairly simple and Sony has given the system an intuitive UI. The first step to resetting the system is to go to “Settings” from the console’s main menu, and then select the “System” tab. In the next menu, select “System Software.” From there, a “Reset Options” tab should appear. In that tab, players should select “Reset Your Console,” and confirm once again with “Reset.”

  • Select “Settings” from the main menu
  • Select “System”
  • Select “System Software”
  • Select “Reset Options”
  • Select “Reset Your Console”
  • Confirm with “Reset”

Once confirmed, the console will completely clear its hard drive and restore all settings to their factory defaults. The reset process itself should be fairly brief, though players will need to repeat all the steps performed in the console’s initial set-up sequence. If the factory reset does not resolve the issue, PS5 owners may want to reach out to PlayStation on Twitter, via the @AskPlayStation account.

PS5 owners who have other questions about the console can also consult PlayStation’s official FAQ, which explains the various features of the new system. Apart from next generation graphics and gameplay, some of the console’s most notable features include backwards compatibility with PlayStation 4 titles, the DualSense controllers’ haptic feedback triggers, and a host of non-gaming entertainment apps including Netflix, Spotify, Apple TV, and more.

Despite a few technical hang-ups, the PlayStation 5’s launch has been well-received so far. And while the competition with the Xbox Series X/S will be fierce this holiday season, it also appears to be good natured, with Xbox extending congratulations to Sony on a successful launch.

The PS5 boasts a fun array of launch titles, including the system exclusives, Godfall, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and the remaster of From Software’s Demon’s Souls. So far, the only rate-limiting factor on the PS5’s success has been the scarce availability of consoles, and the unfortunate-yet-inevitable price gouging from scalpers.

The PlayStation 5 is available now.
