Marvel’s Avengers was riddled with sky-high expectations and was considered one of the most highly anticipated games of this year. With a star-studded cast that includes the Naughty Dog Trio: Nolan North, Troy Baker, and Laura Bailey for the roles of Iron-Man, The Hulk, and Black Widow respectively, the game presented a well written main story told through the perspective of the charismatic Kamala Khan, portrayed by Sandra Saad. However, Marvel’s Avengers inconsistent gameplay and performance issues kept it from being a good if not a great live service title at launch.
Marvel’s Avengers‘ dwindling player count on all the platforms has been a matter of concern for the game’s publisher Square Enix, which recently revealed the quarterly financial reports for the company that confirmed a whooping 6.5 billion Yen loss for its Digital Entertainment section. While these numbers do not entirely represent the repercussions of the launch of Marvel’s Avengers, it still contributes a hefty amount to that considering how the game was supposedly the biggest launch for Square Enix this season. As of last weekend, Marvel’s Avengers on Steam boasted only 1190 concurrent players at its peak. These numbers show a 96% decline since the game’s debut. Moreover, the average player count is also not any better with only 752 players seen every hour in November.

While the latest patch adds a plethora of quality of life changes, Marvel’s Avengers is still far from a perfect game. Moreover, the game’s next-gen ports of Xbox Series X/S and PS5 has been delayed into 2021, which is concerning as the game’s performance on current-gen systems does have a few issues. Additionally, the Kate Bishop DLC, which was scheduled to be the first post-launch DLC for the game, was delayed from October with no solid new release date as of yet.
Marvel’s Avengers is not the first live-service game to have a turbulent launch. Titles like Fallout 76, Anthem, Destiny 2, and The Division 2 were all met with a similar fate at the beginning. Many of them found ways to improve such as Fallout 76 which has been receiving consistent updates that have made the game significantly better than what it was at launch. With the addition of Wastelanders DLC that added Human NPC’s, as well as the upcoming Steel Dawn DLC that brings back the Brotherhood of Steel, it seems that Fallout 76 is headed in a good direction.
The same could be said about Marvel’s Avengers if Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix continues to build on what was their initial vision for the game. With a Spider-Man DLC confirmed and many other popular MCU characters promised to be added for free in the future update, Marvel’s Avengers may just turn out to be the ultimate Avengers game that fans have been craving for.
Marvel’s Avengers is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a free PS5, Xbox Series X/S update coming in 2021.
