The original version of Plague Inc. is all about creating some kind of an infection or virus and spreading it across the world in an attempt to kill all living organisms with it. However, given the current global situation with COVID-19, developer Ndemic Creations has decided to release an expansion for the game where players save the world from a deadly virus by using tools and resources to get it under control.
The information about the new mode comes from the development studio itself. Known as Plague Inc: The Cure, the new mode tasks its players with controlling and eradicating a disease by hunting it down, controlling the outbreak, supporting the economy, and essentially developing a vaccine that is effective enough. According to Ndemic Creations, before releasing the new Plague Inc. mode, the studio partnered up with global health experts in order to make it as authentic as possible, meaning that players are in for an accurate and realistic experience.
One thing that is worth noting about the game is that once COVID-19 became a worldwide pandemic, Plague Inc.’s popularity increased dramatically and players wanted to see how far they could take the gameplay experience by creating their very own viruses and spreading them across the world. Ironically enough, Ndemic Creations had to issue a public statement asking its fans not to view the game as a “scientific model” and to look elsewhere for information. In other words, players didn’t have to use Plague Inc. as a simulator, but instead look towards credible information from health organizations.
Ndemic Creations’ release of Plague Inc: The Cure isn’t the only way of dealing with COVID-19. Back when the new game mode was initially announced, Ndemic Creations donated $250,000 across multiple health organizations organizations in order to help in the fight against the outbreak. With the studio now releasing the new game mode, players themselves can fight against a pandemic in their own way by using a variety of resources.
It’s worth noting that Plague Inc: The Cure‘s availability will last as long as the outbreak remains a threat and until COVID-19 is brought under control. Since it’s not fully clear when everything will be normalized, players (in a way) have a limited amount of time to try the new game mode for themselves and save the world one way or another. However, based on how the new expansion is going to be received, Ndemic Creations might end up permanently keeping the game mode and letting future players give it a try.
Plague Inc: The Cure is available now for mobile devices via the App Store and Google Play as a free expansion for the base game. A console and Steam version will be released soon.
