The next-generation consoles are finally upon the world. Both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 come packed in with new controllers. The former is a more subtle iteration on its predecessor, while Sony’s DualSense controller changes many things about the last console’s DualShock 4.
It is thicker, has an entirely different feel, and includes a whole new vibration system which better immerses players in the game. The DualSense’s aesthetic took players by surprise upon the first reveal. Despite the polarizing look, the reception to the controller has been positive once people got the chance to try it out for themselves.
10 Sony Is Part Of The Rebel Alliance And A Traitor
The above meme might have been made to make fun of the controller, but it really points out one of the DualSense’s strengths. What other gaming peripheral can be used as a helmet in case the evil empire attacks someone’s ship? Even more, it would probably serve well as a hard hat in construction areas or a motorcycle helmet. At the same time, it did not help the poor rebel from Star Wars.
9 It’s Always Sunny In Sony’s Consoles
While some may decry the odd look of the DualSense, no one can deny it gave Sony a lot of coverage. Every meme people make poking fun at the controller is more free advertising. Not all of these are negative, either, since who wouldn’t love playing new PS5 games using Dennis Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It would make a lot of sense if they ever released a Leisure Suit Larry game on the console.
8 Something Does Not Add Up Here
So many were taken aback at the DualSense’s reveal, but they should remember it is far from the weirdest controller reveal from the company. Those with good memories can recall the weird prototype controller design Sony revealed for the PS3, which people called the banana or boomerang.
Sony claimed it was never intended as a final look, and was showcased to replicate the feel of the new controllers, which was weird because the Sixaxis looks and feels almost exactly like a DualShock 2.
7 Sony Does Give A Honk
The DualSense’s share button has a new icon above it, and it it looks oddly familiar to a certain memetic game starring a goose. Untitled Goose Game took the world by storm for a little while and it is certainly a coincidence the button uses the honk sign, it would be nice to think Sony took a little inspiration from the game. Not every controller gives a honk about players, but the DualSense does.
6 Take The Plans And Run
Some are saying the DualSense’s look mimics the Xbox controller a little too closely. While the button layout and analog stick placement remains mostly the same from the prior iterations, the thicker feel reminds one of Microsoft’s gamepad. Not everybody buys into this, though, since making a controller a little beefier hardly constitutes plagiarism. When the console wars are this hot, however, some fans will find any reason to criticize a particular company.
5 Wait, Is The DualSense Sentient?
This should be worrisome for any PlayStation 5 owner. If the controller’s design really replicates the style of Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human, then what is to stop it from developing feelings of its own?
If the DualSense declares its independence one day, will owners force it to stay in the house or respect its sentience and let the controller live its own life? Anyone who has seen Blade Runner know it is better to comply with androids who want to live freely.
4 Shots Fired
A lot of people are really jumping on this bandwagon. When putting the two controllers side by side, it is a little easier to see the similarities. The DualSense still has a lot of unique aspects that separate it from the competitor. The touch pad, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback all give it a unique flair. Additionally, people say it is easily Sony’s most comfortable controller.
3 The Teeth
People are wondering why the DualSense is white. While it probably is done to match the PlayStation 5’s design, it could be for the above picture. Maybe every time people grip the controller, they are actually holding the teeth of a lion shaped and morphed into the new gamepad. What better way to show off Sony’s fierce ambition than to have the controller be a literal set of teeth. It makes it easier for the company to take a bit out of the competition.
2 Cross-Breeding
Cross-play is all the rage these days when it comes to online multiplayer. playing Call of Duty and Fortnite with friends on different consoles is nothing but pure delight. This meme, however, is talking about cross-breeding; specifically for controllers. The DualSense definitely looks like a cross between the DualShock 4 and Xbox One controller in several ways. At least it still retains the traditional layout of a PlayStation controller, giving fans something with which they are already familiar.
1 The Evolution Of Controllers
What better way to showcase the evolution and differences between the PlayStation controllers than to compare them to Captain America from The Avengers. While it may seem like the first and last comparison should be reversed, one has to remember how light the Sixaxis controller for the PS3 feels without the rumble inside. Removing rumble for that controller was a weird move, which was quickly rectified with the introduction of the DualShock 3.
