Darkwing Duck, Disney‘s classic early 90s cartoon series about a crime fighting mallard, has become the latest of many old favorites to earn an upcoming reboot. Disney knows how to milk its various properties for all they’re worth, so while it’s not so much a surprise to see the fan darling show finally receive the same treatment as many of its contemporaries, the real surprise comes from wondering why it took so long.
The reboot is in early production, but will unsurprisingly air on Disney+ once it’s ready to see the world. Canadian film company Point Grey Pictures, founded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, will produce the series, with James Weaver and Alex McAtee of the same organization joining Rogen and Goldberg as producers.
During its original 3-season run from 1991-1992, Darkwing Duck captured the hearts of fans with its endearing characters and sense of humor. A spinoff of the popular show with an aggressively catchy theme, DuckTales, the new superhero series set itself apart with a noticeable focus on action. It even featured characters from the original show (notably the pilot Launchpad McQuack) in similar but still new roles.
The character of Darkwing Duck himself and his adopted daughter Gosalyn most recently appeared in the current reboot of DuckTales (albeit in slightly different versions of the characters), leading many to speculate that it may be signaling a similar revival for the beloved superhero series. While it’s presently unclear whether the upcoming Darkwing Duck series will be a direct spinoff of that particular version of the characters, it seems those fan theories were correct in a way.
After the critical success of 2017’s DuckTales, it’s almost like poetry that Darkwing Duck would eventually follow suit. The show’s snappy writing and sense of humor proved that a classic series like that could easily transition into the modern age. While there are currently no writers officially attached to the upcoming project, it should hopefully be safe to say that Disney will take the triumph of DuckTales to heart in that respect.
All signs point to more of the high quality production fans have come to expect. Even the recent appearances of Darkwing Duck and Gosalyn in DuckTales (with Jim Cummings returning to voice the former and Stephanie Beatriz playing the latter) proved the ideas can still work. Again, whether or not the reboot will feature these specific versions of the characters has yet to be seen, but it should still be a satisfying indication of what’s to come.
