The Peter Parker face swap controversy continues in Spider-Man Remastered as many players struggle to get used to the change as they progress through the game. One scene, in particular, is causing a commotion online, as the new model’s face isn’t nearly as expressive as the original. People are weighing in with their thoughts, but most people agree that it doesn’t quite hit the emotional marks it needs to within the scene.
Just as a heads up, the scene in question contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Spider-Man Remastered, so keep that in mind.
Near the end of the game, even after Doc Ock has gone full supervillain, Peter still tries his best to appeal to the better nature of his mentor and friend. But Peter soon realizes soon that there’s no hope of bringing him back, and the look on his face clearly shows the amount of pain he’s going through — it’s very emotional. The new face model, unfortunately, struggles to capture this heartbreaking moment as well as the original because it isn’t nearly as expressive.
Twitter user AjepArt posted comparison images to demonstrate just how different the scenes play out in the remaster. Many agree that it doesn’t quite do the job as well as the original, which is something fans have feared since the switch was announced. Insomniac released a statement on the change, saying that it was done due to it being a better facial match for actor Yuri Lowenthal and that the company is striving to deliver more believable-looking characters for the next generation console. Scenes like this don’t help make a good case for what Insomniac was intending, but the developer has stated that it is listening to feedback so it can improve on things going forward.
One feature in the remaster most players are enjoying is the return of the boat people. Since Spider-Man Remastered keeps many of the original game’s contents, this includes certain easter eggs. Back when people were first exploring the game, players managed to push the camera far away from the map to view NPCs on a boat. The models were downright creepy with how unfinished they appeared. They soon became the subject of jokes and memes. The remaster recreates the boat people easter egg but with an added surprise. On one of the models, a developer left a yellow sticky note to greet players.
Those who are playing Spider-Man Remastered, or intend to, can play the game fresh from the start, but Insomniac says that soon they won’t have to. The developer announced it will be updating the game around Thanksgiving with an option to import saves from the PS4 version. This way, all of the progress made in the original will transfer over seamlessly. This patch will also include three new suits.
Spider-Man Remastered is available now on PS4 and PlayStation 5.
