The 8th generation of Pokémon was full of Pokédex controversy during Sword and Shield’s initial release. With the introduction of the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs plenty of Pokémon have been added to the Sword and Shield dex, and a couple of those additions happen to be brand new Pokémon! Or… at least new Galarian forms of old Pokémon, which for many fans is just as good!
Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion brings legendary Pokémon back to the forefront with Dynamax Adventures that allow players to catch old legendaries (and their shiny variations), as well as opportunities to be gifted and catch other more exclusive legendaries like Cosmog and Keldeo. The expansion also introduces a variety of new legendary Pokémon for players to quickly stash away in their PCs forever.
9 Galarian Slowking
The spooky new Lich King of the Pokémon world, Galarian Slowking, is the only new non-legendary Pokémon added into Sword and Shield through the Crown Tundra DLC. Galarian Slowking’s addition was expected, as fans noticed teaser artwork during the initial reveal for both the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs. Using a Galarica Wreath on a Galarian Slowpoke will evolve it into the Poison and Psychic-type Galarian Slowking, with its signature move Eerie Spell, which deals psychic damage and removes 3pp from the opponents last used move.
8 Galarian Articuno
After arriving in the Crown Tundra and following Peony into Freezington, players will learn about the giant mysterious tree where legendary Pokémon are said to gather. Players will see the three Galarian forms of the legendary birds; Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres all flying off in different directions.
Players can find the Psychic and Flying type, Galarian Articuno, flying around the Crown Tundra. When players approach, Articuno will create two clones and start flying in a circle. Players need to keep the real Articuno in their sights, as when they slow down, approaching will begin a battle with the legendary. Approaching a clone will cause Articuno to fly away to a different part of the Crown Tundra.
7 Galarian Zapdos
The Fighting and Flying-type, Galarian Zapdos, has been a goofy surprise for many players. The flying type is totally landlocked and its ostrich-like form results in hilarity when running around camp. Galarian Zapdos can be found sprinting at full speed through the wild area in the main Galar region. Catching Galarian Zapdos is fairly straightforward, as it runs away from the player when spotted. Chasing it down on a bike will eventually result in Zapdos slowing down and tiring out. Persistence is key, as keeping Zapdos in players’ sights will eventually result in a battle.
6 Galarian Moltres
The Dark and Flying-type form of the final legendary bird, Moltres, can be found flying around the Isle of Armor in a loop. It will eventually fly past the Master Dojo, so players should get on their bike and plan to try and cut it off.
Galarian Moltres has the signature move Fiery Wrath, which is a 90 power special attack that also has the potential to make opponents flinch. This move paired with Nasty Plot and Air Slash makes Galarian Moltres the perfect flinch focused special attacker.
5 Regieleki
The Crown Tundra introduced two new legendary giants to go along with Regirock, Registeel, Regice, and Regigigas. The first new giant is Regieleki, the electric type giant. In order to capture Regieleki, players will need to first capture the original three giants. Bringing all three Regis to the final temple in 3 Point Pass will unlock the temple and prompt the player to choose between Regieleki and Regidrago. After choosing Regieleki, players should illuminate dots on the floor matching the dot pattern on Regieleki’s face. This will allow players to battle and capture the electric giant, Regieleki.
4 Regidrago
Capturing the Dragon type giant, Regidrago is very similar to obtaining Regieleki. Players will need to obtain the giants Regirock, Registeel, and Regice and bring them to the temple in 3 Point Pass. This time, when prompted, players should select Regidrago rather than Regieleki. Lighting up Regidrago’s face pattern on the floor will then unlock the Dragon type legendary giant, Regidrago. With its signature move Dragon Energy, Regidrago is incredibly dangerous at max HP, dealing damage based on a 150 base power multiplied due to have the same type attack bonus.
3 Glastrier
Obtaining Calyrex’s ice-type steed is a matter of narrative in the Crown Tundra. Following Peony’s expedition clues will lead players all over the Tundra, helping Calyrex to recover its lost power and reclaim its mighty steed. At a point in the expedition players will be able to choose between growing a carrot in an icy field or in a cemetery field. Choosing the icy field will summon Glastrier. Completing this expedition and capturing Calyrex in its Rider form will also catch its mount. Glastrier boasts very high Physical attack, Defense, and decent Special Defense and HP, making it a powerful Pokémon on its own.
2 Spectrier
Calyrex’s ghost-type steed, Spectrier is obtained in a similar way. Players will need to choose the graveyard field during the expedition and capture Calyrex up in its castle ruins. Spectrier is outfitted with monstrous Special Attack and Speed stats, but its Defenses are overwhelmingly mediocre. Additionally, Spectrier doesn’t have any signature moves of its own, further adding to its lack of speciality. Where Spectrier truly shines is when it’s combined with Calyrex. With the signature move Astral Barrage and a whopping 165 Special Attack and 150 Speed this special form really packs a punch.
1 Calyrex
The focus of the Crown Tundra’s first mystery expedition is the legendary king, Calyrex. The Grass and Psychic-Type leads the player all over the Crown Tundra attempting to regain its long-forgotten power. Calyrex has the ability to ride each of its legendary steeds, Glastrier and Spectrier. In its rider forms, Calyrex gains massive power and two signature moves in Glacial Lance and Astral Barrage. While riding Spectrier, Calyrex gains a massive Special Attack and Speed Stat. In contrast, when riding Glastrier, Calyrex is focused on Physical Attack, Defense, and Special Defense.
