Despite the fact the remake of Resident Evil 3 has been out for over half a year, several members of the Resident Evil community continue to actively enjoy the game. With the release of the PS5, even more people will have a chance to experience Resident Evil 3 via the next generation of consoles. The PS5 version of the game includes a neat little feature for helping players manage their health.
A staple of Resident Evil’s game mechanics is its health and inventory management. Survival horror games tend to feature these kinds of integral mechanics, so much so that the use of herbs and various other collectible items featured in the game has become practically iconic. Now it seems the PS5 version has developed a way to help players keep track of their character’s condition.
The PS5 DualSense controller features a light strip to help differentiate players, with each color of light representing which player is which. However, as a way of adding additional ambience to gameplay and to help player keep track of how much health they have left, the controller’s light strip will glow to indicate health: green for full health, yellow for half health, and red for near death.
While this is a neat little discovery, this concept, admittedly, is not exactly new in terms of the PS5. The PS4 controller featured a lightbar on the back of the controller that also changed colors to help differentiate players. While not every game utilized the backlight in wholly creative ways, some games used the backlight very similarly to how it’s used in the PS5 version of Resident Evil 3 as a way to illustrate changes in the game’s environment.
Resident Evil 2 employed a similar mechanic that showed how much health the player had left via the lightbar on the back of the PS4 controller. This followed the same structure as the PS5 version where green is full health, yellow is half health, and red is near death. It’s interesting how such a simple aesthetic controller trait carried over between console generations.
In any case, it will be intriguing to see how developers utilize the PS5’s various systems and mechanics. With such new hardware implementations such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, it leaves a lot of room for creativity and innovation the part of the development studios. With the launch of the PS5 still fresh in people’s minds, it will be interesting to see where things progress from here.
Resident Evil 3 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One with backward compatibility available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
