Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the most iconic mascots in gaming ever since he first appeared on the Sega Genesis in 1991. Although Sega’s lightning-fast blue mammal is a favorite for so many, there are aspects about him and his games that have been hidden behind Sega’s doors for decades. During a recent Extra-Life for charity stream, Sega showed off some never before concept art of some Sonic games.
During the stream, Sega set some milestones for viewers to meet, and with each successful hit, Sega would release concept art of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes, Sonic titles from 2001 and 2003 respectively.
The two games are some of the fanbases favorite Sonic titles, so it is interesting to see how these games were conceptualized. The art ranges from pencil sketches inside pyramid-like structures to fully colorized and realized swamps to 3D art showcasing Sonic standing on top of Tail’s plane.
Sonic has had a very interesting video game path. The series burst onto the gaming scene as a legitimate competitor to Super Mario, thanks to aggressive campaigns by Sega. The franchise seemed to struggle at the beginning of the 3D era, and since then, the franchise has found various levels of high success and low flops both in 2D and 3D. The games are often filled with brilliant ideas and concepts, which this art showcases, but sometimes the realization of those ideas fall flat. Sonic Unleashed, for example, is a game from 2008 that was marred by performance issues. However, Sonic Unleashed now runs wonderfully on the Xbox Series X via backward compatibility mode, showing that the idea was solid, even if the final product had hiccups back in 2008.
