It’s not uncommon for video games, like most entertainment mediums, be it a movie, novel, or music, to indulge in a knowing reference to something else that may have inspired or influenced it. Easter eggs and loving references are often sprinkled into video games and provide fans something to hunt or enjoy if they happen to discover them, as is the case in a recently discovered nod to Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding in the recently released Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
2019’s Death Stranding was known for its long, purposeful game direction that saw its protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges, delivering packages across the land. In reference to that mission, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla features a well-hidden side mission that revels in its Death Stranding approach.
Early in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, gamers can take over a settlement. Over time, players can earn materials they can use to improve and upgrade their settlement and its abilities, including the option to build a trading post that permits the buying and selling of items. Building this trading post will give gamers the opportunity to start this Death Stranding-esque side-mission.
Once the trading post has been established and built, players can discover a list detailing four items. Speaking with the owner of the trading post will reveal that these items have yet to be collected by their customers. At this point, the option becomes clear: Eivor can inhabit the role of a Viking-era Sam Porter Bridges and traverse the land to deliver these items to their awaiting owners.
The going won’t be easy, however, as delivery cannot be done by horseback. Instead, in true Death Stranding fashion, Eivor will have to cross the game’s expansive, beautiful world by foot, planning their journey meticulously in order to safely deliver the items as previous routes that may have provided little concern can now prove difficult to traverse, especially if you’re trying to wade across a river carrying a heavy item or climb a steep mountain path.
Analyzing the discovered list, gamers can deduct where the customers are and begin their arduous mission, whether it is to deliver a stone slab, a jar of rosewater mead, a crate of bowls, or, heaviest and most cumbersome of all, an anvil. However, it’s worth noting that gamers wanting to tackle this mission can speed up their progress slightly by using a boat to transport items.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is the twelfth major iteration in the popular and long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise, which began with 2007’s Assassin’s Creed. It is the twenty-second overall release in the series and tells the story of Eivor, a Viking raider who gets caught up in the escalating conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Templar Order.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
