The demand for major new Destiny 2 content has remained strong over the past year. After 2019’s Shadowkeep expansion topped the Steam sale charts at launch, its follow-up expansion, Beyond Light, has pulled off an impressive sales feat of its own, becoming not just the highest-selling game on the platform, but the second-highest too.
The latest Steam charts (as spotted by ResetEra members) show that the Deluxe Edition of Beyond Light has generated the most revenue of any game on the digital storefront this week, while the bundle containing both the expansion and its season pass generated the second most. Impressively, Beyond Light even managed to snag a third spot on the latest top 10 best-sellers, with the regular version taking seventh place.
Since the rankings are based on revenue only, it’s unknown at this time how many copies of Beyond Light have been sold in the last few days. Whatever the numbers are, they’re enough for Destiny 2 to knock Phasmophobia, which had dominated Steam sales for three weeks, down to fifth place, putting it below the Valve Index VR kit and Football Manager 2021.
The success of Beyond Light so far is even more impressive in light of the problems that have affected it since launch. Unsurprisingly, the expansion’s huge update and influx of players on Tuesday led to server problems that made it difficult for players to access the game. Players have also been discovering a fair number of technical issues, with the worst glitches forcing Bungie to disable some of Destiny 2‘s bounties and weapons, as well as delay the next Trials of Osiris to the end of the month.
Technical problems aside, a few other aspects haven’t been settling well with players, like the fact that Beyond Light only added a third as many new weapons as 2018’s Forsaken expansion, or how unbalanced the new Stasis subclasses feel in PvP. Add to that Bungie’s current approach to sunsetting legacy weapons and armor, and a lot of fans have been having a tough time fully enjoying the rest of expansion’s new Europa setting and story missions.
Still, the fact that Beyond Light has sold well enough to take two of the top spots on Steam suggests most Destiny 2 players are invested in seeing what the game has in store for them over the course of the Season of the Hunt and the rest of Year 4. And with any luck, Bungie will be able to fix the technical problems the expansion currently has while addressing as many of the issues players have with its content as possible.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
