As the Star Wars franchise has remerged over recent years due to Disney’s acquisition of the IP, so has the series’ presence in the world of video games. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order released to universal acclaim last year, Star Wars: Squadrons hit shelves last month, and a new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game is rumored to be in development.
However, the franchise will seemingly be making a big push into the mobile space in the coming years as well, with Zynga announcing its opened a new studio specifically geared toward developing a Star Wars experience. According to the devs, the title won’t stray too far from the type of releases it’s known for, with the team revealing it will be a “premiere mobile game.”
The studio will be based in Austin, Texas, and will be lead by Jeff Hickman and Matthew Hemby. It will also be teaming with another subsidiary of Zynga, NaturalMotion, to bring the game to life. The studio actually has a lot of experience working with the Star Wars license, with the team taking on the free-to-play Star Wars: Commander mobile strategy game before it was shut down earlier this year. The team no doubt has a lot of expertise bringing the franchise’s vast universe to mobile devices and will be an asset in establishing whatever Zynga’s new take on the world turns out to be.
For those who aren’t familiar with Zynga’s work, the company has had a hand in a number of popular mobile games of the years, most notably the FarmVille series. It has worked frequently with other franchises before though, developing mobile games surrounding Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Willy Wonka, and Wizard of Oz. It’s currently one of the bigger names in mobile gaming, having developed a wide catalogue of titles in several different genres. There’s no word on when this new game will release just yet, although it seems it’s in the very early stages of development.
As for the Star Wars franchise, while Disney’s official sequel trilogy has finished, it seems there’s still a lot of new content coming for the series. The Mandalorian is currently a huge part of this holiday’s TV schedule, seeing Mando and Baby Yoda journeying across the Star Wars universe and meeting some familiar faces, while an Obi-Wan spin-off show is currently in the works. Meanwhile, Taiki Waititi recently signed on to helm his own movie set in the universe and Leslye Headland will allegedly be delivering a Star Wars TV show set in an alternate timeline.
A new Star Wars game is officially in development at Zynga for mobile devices.
