Steve Carell’s Space Force Blasts Off for Season 2 at Netflix

Netflix has officially renewed the Steve Carell comedy series Space Force for a second season. The renewal arrives with a handful of changes behind the scenes, including the addition of a new co-showrunner to serve alongside series co-creator Greg Daniels.

Space Force stars Carrell as Mark R. Naird, a decorated pilot and four-star general who aspires to run the United States Air Force. However, his ambitions take an unexpected turn when he’s tasked with leading a group of eccentric scientists to establish the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Space Force. The series debuted in May 2020 to mixed reviews that, for the most part, praised the star-studded cast and production value while criticizing the uneven tone and frequently unsuccessful jokes.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned Netflix is hoping the second season of Space Force will be able to “grow creatively and better connect with viewers” through a series of creative revamps that include adding Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation producer Norm Hiscock as co-showrunner. Furthermore, Jimmy O. Yang, who portrays Dr. Chan Kaifang on the series, will join the writing staff for season 2 and production will move from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada, to reduce the budget. While Netflix has not determined a release date for Space Force season 2, filming is currently scheduled to begin in 2021.

The series was inspired by the establishment of the United States Space Force branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on the orders by U.S. President Donald Trump. Carell reunited with Daniels, who formerly served as the showrunner on The Office, to co-create Space Force, which Netflix reportedly pursued aggressively. In January 2019, the streamer gave Space Force a straight-to-series order, with Carell’s salary for the first season said to have topped $1 million per episode.

Netflix’s hope of seeing Space Force find its footing during the second season is not unjustified. After all, both The Office and Parks and Recreation are widely regarded as having poor freshman debuts before receiving acclaim with subsequent seasons.

Earlier this year, reports suggested Netflix and the U.S government could become embroiled in a trademark dispute over Space Force. While Netflix has filed for a Space Force trademark in multiple regions across the globe, the United States merely had a pending trademark application for the name at the time.

Space Force is now available on Netflix.
