Earning exotic items in Destiny 2 isn’t always the most rewarding experience. Most exotics in Destiny 2 are earned first through earning Exotic Engrams, essentially loot boxes that will reward a random exotic item. Earning Exotic Engrams can be challenging and fun, but there’s no real connection between the player and the exotic item they eventually earn. In Destiny 2‘s Beyond Light expansion, Bungie is trying something new.
Exotic Armor in Beyond Light is earned in an entirely new way, it now appears to be confirmed. Rather than have specific challenges that earn an Exotic Engram, each type of exotic armor is earned in one specific way. This method appears to be the completion of Master or Legendary difficulty Lost Sectors in Beyond Light. Players will complete the Lost Sector and will have a randomized chance of having the exotic armor for that location drop.
For example, this past week the Exodus Garden 2A Lost Sector in Beyond Light was set up to have an exotic drop. If a player looked at the location information for Exodus Garden 2A set with a Legend difficulty, they’d see an exotic reward listed under it, the reward being an Exotic Head Armor drop upon completion. It could take one run of the Lost Sector or it could take dozens more, but completing the Lost Sector at that difficulty would give the player at least a chance of earning an exotic.
There are some catches, of course. These rewards can only be earned if doing the Lost Sector solo, and the Legend difficulty is no joke. A Light Level of 1250 is recommended for the Exodus Garden Lost Sector, though they can be done with lower light. The only other important detail to note is that Lost Sectors do have to be completed at normal difficulty before their higher difficulty opens up.
For the time being, it appears that all of Beyond Light‘s exotic armor is earned through high-difficulty Lost Sectors. There are only six pieces of armor known to be included in Beyond Light so far, the Athyrs’s Embrace, Dawn Chorus, Icefall Mantle, Mask of Bakris, Necrotic Grip, and Precious Scars; three helmets and three gauntlets. They may or may not be available all at the same time, may rotate between helmet and gauntlet availability, or otherwise.
It’s no secret that Destiny 2 players like more Bungie-authored ways of earning loot, but not every exotic weapon or armor piece can have an exclusive questline. Whether this new method of earning exotics proves more popular than straightforward Exotic Engrams remains to be seen, but it’s clear Bungie is at least willing to try new things.
Destiny 2 Beyond Light is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade arriving on December 8.
