EA vet Patrick Soderlund’s new studio starting work on team-based multiplayer shooter

To the shock of no-one, DICE vet Soderlund is making a PVP shooter.

Former Electronic Arts exec Patrick Soderlund has given us an update about what his new studio Embark is up to.

In a post on Medium, Soderlund wrote that the developer has started work on its second project, a brand new team-based PVP shooter. The game has no name yet, but Embark’s founder shared some concept art featuring a traditional soldier – albeit with a creepy mask on – a cowgirl, a child in a hoodie, and a samurai.

“It’s a concept that leans heavily into team-based gameplay and puts dynamism, physicality, and destruction front and centre,” Soderlund wrote.

“Some of the industry’s most experienced first-person-shooter developers are with us here at Embark, and if you think working with them on a new project sounds like fun, you should take a look at our open positions.”

The development vet also shared an update about how work was progressing on Embark’s previously revealed sci-fi co-op action game.

The studio’s first project entered production in the spring of this year. The post also features some a gif of the game in action and we have to say it looks pretty tasty. It still doesn’t have a name, either. Since it announced its debut project, Embark’s headcount has quadrupled from around 50 to in the region of 200 people.

Soderlund left EA back in August 2018 and set up Embark Studios with the backing of Korean games firm Nexon in November of that year. He was the former CEO of Battlefield maker DICE, which was acquired by EA in 2006. In the wake of that, Soderlund rose to be the head of EA’s Worldwide Studios and the company’s chief design officer.
