God of War 5 Might Not Be PS5 Exclusive | Game Rant

Back in September, Sony officially announced the long-rumored God of War 5, stopping short of giving the game a proper title, but confirming that it will be coming to the PlayStation 5 at some point in 2021. Besides revealing God of War 5‘s PS5 release window, Sony revealed virtually nothing else about the upcoming game. In fact, it’s not even clear if the new God of War game will be a PS5 exclusive.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan would not commit to whether or not God of War 5, or whatever it ends up being called, is going to be a PS5 exclusive. “Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today,” he said. While it’s certainly still possible that God of War 5 will be a PS5 exclusive, Ryan’s refusal to commit is an indication that Sony is at least considering bringing the game to PlayStation 4 as well.

This would match with Sony’s previous claims that it plans on supporting the PS4 until at least 2022, which many of its big exclusive games released as cross-gen titles as opposed to releasing exclusively on the PlayStation 5. This should ensure that more gamers are able to get to play the biggest Sony releases, which is good news in light of the ongoing PS5 shortages, but it on the other hand, it does mean that these games won’t be able to take full advantage of the PS5’s next-generation technology.

Even if God of War 5 isn’t a PS5 exclusive, though, it should still have some exclusive features on the new console. The PlayStation 5 is significantly more powerful than the PS4, and is able to deliver more consistent and higher frame rates and lightning-fast loading times, not to mention other visual enhancements like ray tracing. If God of War 5 ends up being a cross-gen title that releases for both PS4 and PS5, one has to imagine that the PS5 version will be the definitive way to experience the game, and by a considerable margin.

In the meantime, one has to wonder if God of War 5 will eventually make its way to PC as well. Sony has recently experimented with bringing some of its big exclusive games to PC, with the most notable example being Horizon Zero Dawn. Perhaps a God of War 5 PC port is in the cards, though if so, it seems highly unlikely that it would be released at the same time as the PlayStation version.

For now, all fans can do is speculate about Ryan’s comment and hope that new God of War 5 information comes sooner rather than later.

God of War 5 is in development for PS5.
