As if to answer the question “where’s that new Frasier show?” on at least several people’s lips, Kelsey Grammer has united with Alec Baldwin to make a new comedy series that is still not Frasier. The two veteran humorists are teaming up for a new show already set to air on ABC.
The show, which is currently unnamed, centers on 3 former roommates whose wildly clashing personalities drove them apart in their 20s. Now, a few dozen years later, it seems they’re trying to get together again to right past wrongs and take one last crack at the lives they’ve always dreamed of. Grammer and Baldwin are attached as 2 of the 3 main characters, with the third still yet to be announced.
It seems the series will be enjoying the talents of some proven comedy writers, with Chris Lloyd (not that one) and Vali Chandrasekaran of Modern Family fame joining to write and co-produce the show alongside Grammer and Baldwin. Chandrasekaran is also notable for his work on semi-recent hits like 30 Rock and My Name is Earl, while Lloyd’s writing and producing resume includes classics like Frasier, Wings, and even The Golden Girls. So if the past work of these two powerhouses are anything to go by, this new project will be something to see.
This will be Baldwin’s triumphant return to regular television after sticking mostly to films and Saturday Night Live in the years since 30 Rock. Considering the popularity of his role as the lovably pompous executive Jack Donaghy, fans will likely be eager to see him and Grammer bounce off each other. These are two comedy superstars with similar but unique styles, so their dynamic should be something to behold. Granted, those who saw Boss Baby may be slightly less enthused.
Grammer, meanwhile, has kept himself busy with a steady stream of work and guest appearances since the days of Cheers and Frasier, though that shouldn’t be taken to mean he’s slowed down or diminished. Voice work, dramatic roles, and over 20 years as Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons have ensured that the man who may or may not actually be Frasier Crane stayed in the minds of many over the years, and this upcoming series may just bring his name back into the front lines.
The series is expected to air on ABC in the 2021-2022 season, so there’s plenty of time to speculate while eager potential viewers wait to hear more. What’s the title? Who’s the third roommate? Do they always talk like that? Only time will tell, at least for some of those questions.
