Though a new Mass Effect game has been confirmed to be in development, fans likely did not expect any sort of official information of the project for some time. However, it seems BioWare has subverted those expectations by sharing some concept art for the upcoming Mass Effect project via an art book called BioWare: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development.
The new Mass Effect game was announced on N7 Day, though little was said apart from confirmation that the original team was returning to make the game. While BioWAre will likely remain focused on finishing and promoting Mass Effect: Legendary Edition For some time, fans have been provided with a few pieces of concept art to hold them over until news on the next Mass Effect game arrives, which were photographed by Tumblr user Felassan.
The three images do not give any detail on the companions Mass Effect players will meet on the new journey, but they provide insight on some of the locations that will be explored in the new game. One photo sees the depiction of a bog-like location, with massive trees scattered around an area that is covered in green fog. What is likely the player character can be seen standing outside a ship, with some interesting, humanoid figures moving nearby.
The next image could hint that the game is a sequel to Mass Effect: Andromeda, as the blurry photo seems to show massive Remnant structures from the divisive game. The image is blurry, making it hard to make things out, but there appears to be foliage below the structures. It is unclear if the structures can be explored, but they are certainly big enough to hold plenty of life if so. The last photo is easily the most telling, however, as it gives an idea of where the game’s narrative could be going.
The last concept art piece shows construction of a new Mass Relay, a tool that could allow for a return of some characters from the original Mass Effect trilogy. It could even allow for the making of a proper Mass Effect 4, as the relay allows for travel to many different galaxies — including the Milky Way. If BioWare wanted to bring back Commander Shepherd and the N7 crew, this new relay could give the studio the chance to do so.
Regardless of whether these photos are indicative of a Mass Effect 4 or an Andromeda follow-up, fans of the series have plenty to be excited about. With an excellent N7 day bringing news of this new game alongside confirmation of the remastered Mass Effect trilogy, the future of the series is looking very bright.
