Within the last year especially, Nintendo has seen a good deal of financial success. Given the events of 2020 and the numerous popular titles that the company has released this year, Nintendo has seen a significant increase in sales of its products and games from all over the world. Though, one region, in particular, accounts for the vast majority of Nintendo’s sales within the last year.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted the gaming industry in a largely positive way, at least in terms of commercial sales. With most of the world stuck at home as a result of quarantine led to a rise in video game and hardware sales, with Nintendo receiving its fair share of financial gain. Although, nowhere in the world is that more so the case than in Asia.
Nintendo’s sales regions are split into four sectors: Japan, the Americas, Europe, and “other.” The other region accounts for countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Asian countries outside of Japan. The sales in the other region within the last year have increased by a staggering 152%, with one game, in particular, being a direct cause for that success and even created an increase in sales of Nintendo Switch units.
Ring Fit Adventure has seen an impressive amount of popularity and sales in China. According to the company president, Shuntaro Furukawa, the sales of Ring Fit Adventure in China have actually caused the sales of the Nintendo Switch console to rise as a result. Furukawa also mentioned that as a direct result of this newfound success, the company has begun to initiate ways of localizing their hardware and titles for various regions of Asia in addition to China.
In a way, this makes a lot of sense. In addition to Ring Fit Adventure, a common title that many were purchasing during quarantine was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. At the beginning of quarantine, Animal Crossing became one of the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games ever released, and likely saw its fair share of success in Asia as well.
In any case, it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does to accommodate this new market the company has stumbled into. While the sales increases in Japan, the Americas, and Europe are impressive in their own right, 152% is quite the overwhelming figure to contend with. So long as Nintendo continues to release new games with a high level of demand, such as the recent Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the company should do well for itself.
