Some Macbooks Hit With Black Screen Error After Big Sur Update

Apple users beware. MacBooks are being hit with a frozen black screen when trying to install a new update. The macOS Big Sur update error is being most commonly found on MacBook Pros, although other Apple computers are reporting the same issue.

Releasing on November 12, macOS Big Sur is the 17th iteration of Apple’s operating system. The updated version features a total interface redesign, and is being featured on the new MacBook Pro, Air, and Mac Mini. Apple has also been heavily investing in gaming, reportedly pouring in large amounts of money into game development to bolster its game subscription service, Apple Arcade.

The black screen issue seems to be happening most frequently with the 13-inch model of late-2013 and mid-2014 MacBook Pros. The issues have been initially reported by MacRumors, whose forums had several complaints regarding the black screen, though Reddit and Apple’s own support site have also seen reports of the problem. Users have yet to find any clear indication of what is causing the issue, and simple fixes like booting up in safe mode or resetting NVRAM aren’t working. The latest Apple Event video details what the capabilities of the latest OS are supposed to be.

A large number of bugs are currently plaguing Big Sur’s launch. Some believe the high influx of Mac users trying to update their computers is slowing Apple’s servers to a near-standstill. This has caused newer Macs to operate sluggishly, due to a feature requiring apps to be scanned for malware each time before running. The overcrowded servers have caused extremely lengthy download times, draining batteries (although MacBook battery life can be increased), or just not downloading altogether. Several users are reporting an installation error message when attempting to launch the installer software.

With all of the prominent issues surrounding Big Sur, perhaps it’s best to hold off on the update until Apple resolves all of the outstanding problems. While the UI redesign looks visually impressive, looks only really matter if smooth operation can back it up. Hopefully, the tech giant makes these fixes sooner rather than later, as Microsoft is planning on bringing the Xbox Game Pass to iOS in 2021. Apple has yet to comment on the situation.

Of course, there are plenty of gamers out there who prefer using console, PC, or their own custom builds over Macs. With Black Friday deals constantly happening just about everywhere, the time is ripe for players thinking about building a gaming computer that doesn’t break the budget.
