With Black Friday and December rapidly approaching, Nintendo is no doubt hoping to sell more Switch consoles this holiday season. As such, Nintendo has been releasing commercials showcasing some of the Switch’s top-selling games, including the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Now, Nintendo is putting out Switch commercials centering around some surprising celebrity figures, the most recent of which features American actress, comedian, and rapper Awkwafina showcasing some of the Switch’s best features and titles.
The commercial itself shows Awkwafina going about her daily routine while playing a variety of different titles on the Nintendo Switch. First, viewers see Awkwafina procrastinating in her dressing room with Animal Crossing: New Horizons before shooting a scene. The commercial shows Awkwafina taking the Switch to various locations in handheld mode before ultimately coming home and putting it in the dock. The commercial ends with a fun Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online race where the loser must don a real-life toad costume.
Readers can likely assume who winds up wearing the toad costume at the end of the commercial. All in all, the commercial is a light, fun way to advertise the Nintendo Switch’s unique qualities before the holiday rush. Considering that the Xbox Series X and PS5 just launched last week, Nintendo is going to have to put in a bit of extra work to make sure the Switch stays afloat. The Switch doesn’t have the same power output or graphical fidelity that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 boast, but it has an incredible library of exclusive titles and portability that sets it apart from its competition.
As mentioned above, this isn’t the only Nintendo commercial featuring a celebrity that Nintendo has released recently. Nintendo also partnered with actress Brie Larson to shoot a commercial similar to Awkwafina’s. Larson’s commercial also showcases the Switch’s unique functionality, and games like Animal Crossing and Fortnite, while also demonstrating some of the more diverse applications that the Switch features, like playing Ring-Fit Adventure and using the Ring-Con controller to play various mini-games.
Larson has been vocal in the past about her love of video games, even partnering with Nintendo to promote Animal Crossing: New Horizons back in March. While Awkwafina hasn’t spoken too much in the past about her history with video games, she recently spoke to People Magazine about her collaboration with Nintendo. In the interview, she talks about her love of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, as well as Super Mario 64 and the GameBoy. Awkwafina caps off her interview essentially saying that more and more people are finally realizing that video games can be for everyone. It’s a nice message that really encapsulates what the Nintendo Switch is all about.
The Nintendo Switch is available now.
