Warner Bros. and DC’s The Batman will lay the groundwork for a television spin-off slated to debut on HBO Max. However, the forthcoming series has now experienced a setback with the departure of the writer and showrunner Terence Winter.
Picked up straight to series in July, the spin-off is designed to launch a new Batman cinematic universe across multiple platforms based on characters introduced in the world of director Matt Reeves’ upcoming film. At the DC FanDome event in August, Reeves’ confirmed the series will serve as a prequel to his film, focusing on the Gotham City Police Department and the inner workings of the corrupt city during the first year of operation for the masked vigilante who will become known as Batman.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned Winter, best known as the creator of the period crime drama Boardwalk Empire, departed The Batman spin-off on account of his vision for the series not aligning with the plans of Reeves and other producers. Now, the search for a new showrunner to replace Winter is underway. In addition to Reeves, Winter would have also worked alongside The Batman producer Dylan Clark, who is attached to the spin-off as executive producer alongside Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan of Reeves’ 6th and Idaho banner. HBO Max and studio Warner Bros. Television reportedly declined to comment on Winter’s exit.
Reeves’ The Batman features Robert Pattinson as a young Caped Crusader and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon. However, it remains unclear if either will reprise their respective roles in the HBO Max spin-off. While the series is currently untitled, it is moving forward under the working title Gotham Central, a reference to the comic book series of the same name by writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka.
Warner Bros. has postponed the release date of The Batman multiple times due to production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the UK has entered a second lockdown, filming on the DC film has been allowed to continue in the country.
The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
