The Matrix 4 Wrap Party is Under Investigation in Germany

Despite the global pandemic, some films have managed to push through production and finish filming regardless. One of the more recent films to finally wrap up shooting was Matrix 4, a long awaited continuation of the classic Matrix franchise. Of course, you can’t wrap up shooting without a wrap party, so Matrix 4 had one of those as well, attended by much of the cast and crew, including Keanu Reeves. Unfortunately for them, that very gathering is now under investigation in Germany out of concern they have violated lockdown restrictions.

According to initial reports, Matrix 4 used a sneaky trick to have their gathering in defiance of rules against such events. Cast members apparently came to the event in costume in order to give the appearance that filming was still taking place. This allowed them have 200 people attend the event, far in excess of the 50 person limit Germany has set out for public gatherings. It would seem that the government has caught wind of the trick, however, and officials in the city of Potsdam will be investigating whether the even was actually a ‘film shoot’ or a party.

To be fair to the cast and crew, reports indicate that safety precautions were still taken. Coronavirus tests were given before the event, and masks were encouraged, although they may not have been strictly enforced. Currently the big unknown is how many people outside the cast and crew were invited. If the party was limited strictly to already present cast and crew, then no outside individuals would be exposed, and the production could get a pass on technically violating the rules. If many people from outside the production attended though, the risk of spreading the virus increases dramatically, and the studio could face significant fines for endangering the public.

Hopefully the event turns out to have not endangered anyone, and everyone in the production continues to test negative for the virus. Regardless, it’s something of a bad look for the studio, and probably isn’t going to make the German government happy. In the meantime, all the studio can do is wait for the investigations to conclude, and anticipate the rulings that come their way.

Matrix 4 is planned to release December 22, 2021.
