These days, Tom Holland is a household name. In 2016, he made his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Since then, he has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in two solo Spider-Man films and both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Now that everyone knows him, it’s hard to find movies of his that fly under the radar anymore. That’s especially true since he remains in the MCU and will be leading the upcoming Uncharted film. Still, there’s a lot from Holland’s career that is often overlooked or forgotten about. Some are great hidden gems, while others should probably remain forgotten.
10 Dolittle (14%)
As the most recent entry on this list, it might seem odd to consider Dolittle something that people have forgotten about. It came out in 2020 and should be fresh in everyone’s memory. That being said, a lot of folks aren’t even aware that Tom Holland is in it.
This reboot of the original 1967 film and the ones starring Eddie Murphy sees Robert Downey Jr. take on the role of the title character who can talk to animals. Tom Holland reunited with his MCU counterpart as he voiced Jip, a glasses-wearing dog. Unfortunately, Dolittle was both a critical and commercial failure.
9 The Current War (31%)
Although Dolittle certainly bombed, this might actually be the biggest disappointment of Tom Holland’s career. Released in 2017, The Current War had almost everything going for it that a moviegoer would want. Martin Scorcese was an executive producer, it had a strong cast, and the premise was interesting, yet it was poorly received.
The Current War centers on the battle between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse during the 19th century about which electric delivery system would be utilized in the United States. Holland starred as Samuel Insull alongside Michael Shannon and fellow MCU actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
8 In The Heart Of The Sea (43%)
Continuing the theme of Tom Holland working with his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars, there’s 2015’s In The Heart of the Sea. Before ever donning the Spider-Man suit, Holland appeared in this as Thomas Nickerson alongside Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.
This film is based on a true story and a novel written by Nathaniel Philbrick of the same name. It’s about a whaling ship known as the Essex and how it sank in 1820. The tale was actually the one that inspired the infamous Moby Dick. While it didn’t do well commercially, it was met with mixed reviews.
7 Edge Of Winter (50%)
Interestingly, this isn’t a well-known movie but it did come after Tom Holland’s big break. Edge of Winter was released a few months after Captain America: Civil War, though it’s a much smaller film. The small-budget Canadian psychological thriller is unlike anything else Holland has done.
In it, he portrays Bradley Baker, one of two brothers trapped at a remote cabin with a father they barely know. The dad (Joel Kinnaman) is unpredictable and unstable, adding to the tension. While it received mixed reviews, the performances by the cast were praised.
6 How I Live Now (66%)
When discussing the most promising and talented young actors in the world, Saoirse Ronan and Tom Holland are right at the top of the list. So, getting to see them star in a movie together is worth checking out. That happened back in 2013 with How I Live Now.
Though both were still a bit away from breaking out, their potential was on display here. It sees Daisy (Ronan) sent to the English countryside to stay with her cousins as a war breaks out. Holland plays Isaac, one of her cousins.
5 Pilgrimage (69%)
Arriving in 2017, Pilgrimage marks another Marvel Cinematic Universe connection for Tom Holland, albeit a less obvious one. His co-star in this is Jon Bernthal, who played Frank Castle in Netflix’s The Punisher, which was in the MCU even if it didn’t interact with the films.
This Irish war drama takes place in the 13th century and follows a group of monks as they escort a sacred relic across a harrowing landscape. In the film, Holland plays Brother Diarmuid, also known as The Novice.
4 The Impossible (81%)
Moving into the films that were truly given strong reviews, The Impossible was one of the earliest signs of how talented Tom Holland is. Released in 2012, this movie is based on the true events that Maria Belón experienced during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Tom Holland takes on the role of Lucas, the teenage son of Maria and Henry, played by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Not only was the film met with critical acclaim but Watts was also nominated for Best Actress at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
3 The Lost City Of Z (87%)
Grossing a mere $19.3 million on a $30 million budget, The Lost City of Z could only be described as a box office failure. That’s a shame because it was one of the better reviewed movies in all of 2016. Even Time magazine included it on their list of the ten best films of the year.
Based on a 2009 book of the same name, The Lost City of Z centers on the exploits of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) as he searches for a lost city in the Amazon. Holland played Jack Fawcett, Percy’s son, and the film also starred Robert Pattinson.
2 Locke (91%)
In the early 2010s, it was Tom Hardy who was becoming a breakout star, especially after a turn in a superhero movie (The Dark Knight Rises). In 2013, he was the lead in Locke, a small-budget but well-received British indie flick and again showed why he’s so good.
Hardy plays Ivan Locke and the focus is completely on him. He is the only character seen on screen and every other one is only heard through conversations he has on the phone. One of the voices to talk with him is that of Tom Holland, who voices Eddie, Ivan’s son.
1 The Secret World Of Arrietty (95%)
The main reason that most people might forget about The Secret World of Arrietty being included in Tom Holland’s filmography is that he wasn’t part of it originally. Arriving in 2010, this Studio Ghibli picture was first released in Japanese. The following year, it was adapted with English voice actors.
Among those actors were Holland, who voiced Shō, and Saoirse Ronan, who voiced Arrietty. The film tells the story of a tiny family who lives in the home of other people in secret until their daughter (Arrietty) is discovered. It was again adapted with different voice actors by Disney in 2012.
