Even though it is one of the best selling consoles of the decade, one of the minor irks of the Nintendo Switch is that it has neither an internal microphone nor a Bluetooth adapter. While there are a few solutions on the market, only the HomeSpot Bluetooth audio adapter for Nintendo Switch can support two aptX low-latency connections at once. It also functions as a plug-in microphone.
This small device plugs into the bottom of a Nintendo Switch via USB-C. It may not be compatible with most cases, but it functions as a stand and allows two players to pair their Bluetooth-enabled headphones. Boisterous multiplayer games, such as Super Smash Brothers, can be played side-by-side on the same console, and having the option for players to have their own audio feeds will help with those late-night rumbles.
The Nintendo Switch has some great games out in 2020, and this little peripheral may make for a good holiday gift for someone who already owns a console. Its red and blue buttons match the Switch, and they feature a simple press-and-hold pairing mechanic. The three lights in the middle give a clear indicator of which player’s device is connected, Player 1 or Player 2, with amber indicating the microphone is on and green indicating mic off. The middle light shows whether the connected device is operating with aptX on (blue) or aptX low-latency (amber).
Bluetooth technology has come a long way since Swedish company Ericsson Mobile popularized so-called “short-link” radio in the early 90’s. Qualcomm’s aptX codec was developed around the same time, and the first headset combining the technologies was sold in 2009. AptX-enabled devices can achieve 40ms latency between visuals on the screen and audio played through the Bluetooth device, meaning audio for fast-paced games like Splatoon 2 will sync up to 40ms on most devices.
So picture a pillow fort, couch cushions stacked up and a blanket draped atop, creating a cozy space to ward off the coming chill of winter. Two players lie side by side, headphones on, their faces lit by the glow of the screen propped up on the floor before them, or perhaps hooked up to the TV. Naught can be heard but the furious click-clicking of buttons and the occasional furious banter as they rush to keep up with kitchen orders in Overcooked while others are asleep.
The HomeSpot Bluetooth audio adapter may have been made for Nintendo Switch, but it also comes with a USB to USB-A adapter and a small carrying pouch for safekeeping.
