Since Johnny Depp was asked to leave the Fantastic Beasts franchise, rumors have been flying around over who’ll replace him as Grindelwald. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Mads Mikkelsen’s name has been bandied around heavily and he’s opened up about the casting rumors in a new interview.
Talking to IGN while promoting the upcoming sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking (also starring MCU Spider-Man star Tom Holland), Mikkelsen acknowledged the rumors. Saying over the phone that “oh, that is on the rumor basis as we speak. I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.”
Depp had already filmed one scene for Fantastic Beasts 3 before production was shut down by the current COVID-19 pandemic but was forced to resign from the Harry Potter spin-off series after losing his libel case against a British tabloid. Depp sued The Sun newspaper over their report of allegations of assault made by his ex wife Amber Heard but the judge concluded that the majority of the allegations were true.
There had been several reports that Mikkelsen was approached by director David Yates to replace Depp. His response doesn’t necessarily mean they’re untrue, perhaps the rumor came from the studio eager to cast him or negotiations are still ongoing and neither side can confirm anything just yet.
What’s currently known about Fantastic Beasts 3 is that due to the Depp’s recasting, its theatrical release has been pushed back a year to summer 2022. Cast member Colin Farrell may be unavailable due to his commitments to Matt Reeves DCEU entry The Batman and there’ll be a further two films to follow.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is due for release in Summer 2022.
