HBO Greenlights The Last of Us TV Series | Game Rant

It’s been months since news broke that HBO began putting together a TV series around one of PlayStation’s most revered franchises, The Last of Us. While the news first came out in March to announce the new series, HBO has now officially given the “green light” to the project so it can begin production.

The Last of Us HBO series will be led by Neil Druckmann, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), and Cheryl Strauss (Chernobyl, Game of Thrones) as the executive producers. Druckmann will also write the series with Mazin, who wrote and directed HBO’s other dreary limited series, Chernobyl. Naughty Dog’s President Evan Wells and Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, both from PlayStation Productions, will also serve as executive producers. John Renek (Chernobyl) was set to direct the pilot of The Last of Us series, but Renek had to drop out of the series due to scheduling conflicts.

In the press release, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming said that “Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own. With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, the series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga.”

Along with the announcement, it was confirmed in the press release that The Last of Us series will follow the events of the first game. The series centers on Joel as he is hired to help transport Ellie across the country, which turns out to be a much more difficult task than he expected. The plot for The Last of Us series was first hinted at by Druckmann, who responded to an HBO tweet about well-written women where he suggested that characters he had written would be joining HBO.

While plenty of the showrunners have been announced, HBO has not made an announcement about who might be playing the leads, Joel and Ellie, in the series. After the initial announcement of the new show, Kailyen Dever (Booksmart) expressed interest in playing Ellie in The Last of Us HBO series, saying that she is “a huge fan of that video game.” Troy Baker, the voice actor for Joel in the game, said in an interview with Collider that he thinks Josh Brolin would be “a knockout choice” for the part of Joel.

Since the HBO show announcement, Naughty Dog released the sequel to The Last of Us, aptly named The Last of Us Part 2 and while the game was review bombed by upset fans, critics praised the game across the board. The Last of Us Part 2 received the most award nominations at this year’s Game Awards show with 10, including a nomination for Game of The Year.

The Last of Us HBO Series is currently in development and will release on HBO and HBO Max.
