The last decade has seen virtual reality technology become not just viable but steadily improved upon. One of the most recent examples of this is a new Oculus Quest 2 update this month that allows the headset to run apps at a refresh rate of 90hz (which is equivalent to a framerate of 90fps). That’s a decent step up from the original Quest’s max rate of 72hz, but now it’s being teased that it might be able to go even further in the future, all the way to 120hz.
120fps is quickly becoming the benchmark when it comes to next-gen framerates for games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, so naturally there’s a question of whether VR displays will soon be able to achieve a similarly smooth refresh rate. While the v23 update that the Oculus Quest 2 received last week gets it close with its new 90hz cap, a tweet from Oculus Consulting CTO John Carmack has people thinking that the company might not stop there.
Following Oculus’ announcement of the v23 update’s rollout, Carmack tweeted a warning to developers about the new refresh cap, telling them to avoid setting their Oculus games and apps to the highest framerate available, otherwise they “will run poorly if we release 120 FPS support.”
The wording here is vague enough that it’s not altogether clear if the 120hz support being alluded to will be available on the Quest 2 or for future Oculus headsets, but it’s technically possible. Carmack has said before that the original Quest, while capped at 72hz, could run at 90hz. That being said, while it’s possible that the Quest 2 might be able to hit 120hz, it’s unknown at this time if the headset is capable of handling such a high refresh rate without it seriously affecting performance and battery life.
