Although it has been months since Capcom confirmed Resident Evil 8 to be in development, there isn’t much information that is known about the game as of yet. Currently, Capcom has only revealed that Resident Evil 8 will be in first-person, will take place in a village, will feature the return of Chris Redfield and Ethan Winters, and will have enemies like werewolf-type creatures, witches, and infected villagers.
However, Capcom recently released new art for Chris Redfield, which appears to hint at the character’s fate in the game. The specific art in question sees half of Chris’s face resembling that of a werewolf (as seen above), suggesting that the character will be infected at some point in the game. Of course, the question now is what does this mean for werewolves in Resident Evil 8, and most importantly, how will this impact Chris Redfield’s future in the series?
Before Resident Evil 8’s official announcement, notable leakers revealed that werewolves would be a huge part of the upcoming game. While Capcom still hasn’t confirmed these creatures to be werewolves exactly, the debut trailer for the game did show what appears to be one, which easily explains the leakers’ notions. However, the latest artwork for Chris Redfield also appears to suggest that werewolves will play a central role in the game, not just being a new experiment/enemy type, especially since there is a strong chance that Chris will be one.
At the moment, the exact virus or parasite that will cause humans to transform into werewolves is still unknown. However, it is worth noting that previous viruses and parasites have never produced a werewolf creature, which could mean that Resident Evil 8 will introduce a new bio-organic weapon. It is worth noting that should Resident Evil 8 feature werewolves, it wouldn’t be the first time these creatures appeared in the franchise. In the Resident Evil comics that were released shortly after the first Resident Evil, it has been revealed that Jill Valentine was able to encounter a werewolf in Raccoon City. Although the comics’ plot is not canon, it wouldn’t be impossible for Jill to make an appearance in Resident Evil 8 and witness the unfortunate transformation of her longtime partner.
The question now is, what does this cryptic artwork mean for Chirs Redfield? In the debut trailer of Resident Evil 8, Capcom mentioned that “His story will come to a close,” which is an obvious hint that Resident Evil 8 will be the final game for one of its major characters. As previously mentioned, Chris Redfield and Ethan Winters are confirmed to be in the game, and given the latest artwork, it appears that Capcom has been referring to Chris all along.
Of course, veteran Resident Evil players know that Chris has been an important figure in the franchise since the beginning. Alongside Jill Valentine, Chris is one of the first playable characters in the series and has since dedicated his life to the fight against bioterrorism. Whether or not Resident Evil 8 will be Chris Redfield’s final game remains to be seen, but one thing that players could be sure of is that Chris will never be the same after the upcoming game’s events. At least not if this image is any indication.
Hopefully, Chris’s story would end on a good note, especially since his allegiance has been in question ever since the release of Resident Evil 8’s debut trailer. However, given Chris’s importance to the franchise’s overall plot, it is likely that his stint in Resident Evil 8 will be a fight for good, even if it means that he has to do questionable things to get there.
Resident Evil 8 launches in 2021 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
