Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Breaks Down Seasonal Leveling System

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has given a breakdown of its leveling system. The new progression system is set to become active in a few weeks, with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Season 1.

The new info comes via an official blog post from developer Treyarch, which details all of the game’s recent and upcoming updates. However, many players have gotten a glimpse at the Season 1 cosmetics due to an online leak, something the game continues to be plagued with.

Treyarch has entirely revamped its progression system for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. In order to reach Prestige 1, players must first pass through Military Ranks 1-55. They will then enter Season Levels. Notably the biggest change with this comes to the required amount of XP to level up. Rather than each level requiring an increasingly higher level of points, every Season Level requires the same amount of XP.

The current pre-season cap is at Prestige 3, Season Level 100. This will dramatically increase during Season 1, giving players up to 1,000 levels to complete each season. Treyarch also promises new Prestige Levels to earn and the ability to attain Prestige Master at level 200. There is a Prestige Shop that becomes available after players earn their first Prestige Key, where players can unlock Legacy Prestige Icons.

Another aspect of this change is the FPS franchise’s new, unified progression journey. The integration of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with its Warzone and Modern Warfare counterparts, is aiming for a streamlined experience, but remains a controversial decision among the gaming community. The remainder of Treyarch’s post details the latest game updates since its launch. These include various granular adjustments and fixes to weapons, game modes, scorestreaks, and more. For example, enemies will no longer spawn on top of players in Dead Ops Arcade 3.

While it is yet to be determined how favorable the unified progression will be, plenty of veteran players are likely applauding the retooled Prestige System. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Prestige Leveling System works similarly to other Black Ops titles, but with one key difference. Those who decide to Prestige will keep all of their create-a-class content – for the first time ever. Players can earn milestone rewards every 50 Season Levels, which should keep gamers consistently engaged well into the future.

Of course, despite the revamp, not every Call of Duty player lives for the level grind. One thing all CoD fans can likely celebrate, however, is that Nuketown ’84 arrives next week. Players can also snag a free Nuketown Weapon Bundle, but only through December 3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
