Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has had its fair share of bugs and glitches, but the latest exploit discoverer by players is one of the most extreme thus far. On one Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War map in particular, players can launch themselves into the sky like a superhero via a melee exploit.
On the Black Ops Cold War map Crossroads, if an enemy player is standing on a certain rock near one of the two spawns, a player attempting to melee their foe will quickly go flying. This is likely due to the lock-on mechanic of a melee attack, which is meant to ensure that players properly track and hit enemies with the butt of their gun when the button is pressed. With players not able to reach the enemy on the rock, the melee tracking throws them into the sky.
Posted into the CoDCompetitive subreddit, Redditors quickly commented that Call of Duty League teams may use the bug if it is not fixed. Glitch finder itsOBBY shows that this is not a one off bug by any means, something that would indeed make a pro strategy possible. Both itsOBBY and another teammate pull off the glitch multiple times, flying through the sky on Crossroads together. With the glitch requiring a particular enemy placement, however, players in core game modes should not worry too much about seeing this in their games.
For players in hardcore game modes, however, this glitch could be exploited far easier and more effectively. With players able to damage one another in hardcore, a teammate can wait on a rock and then launch the rest of a coordinated team into the sky. While it would still be rare to see, it could become as frustrating as the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War super slide that was discovered in the beta — especially if people find jump glitches on other maps.
For now, the most effective use of the melee bug would be playing the VIP Escort game mode on Crossroads in the hardcore playlist. This is due to the A objective being nearby to the buggy rock, letting players launch straight at the busy location from above. However, a lot needs to go right for players to even use this jump glitch effectively, so as of now, it seems to be mostly harmless fun that has no real impact on gameplay.
This latest glitch joins a long list of reasons as to why some things in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War do not make sense, and it will likely not be the last immersion-breaking incident. With Nuketown ‘84 on the way, it will likely not be long before players find out how to exploit the reimagined classic.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
