Skulls were a popular addition to Halo: Combat Evolved when the Anniversary Edition was released. Skulls are hidden easter eggs that can affect gameplay on subsequent playthroughs, adding great replayability and an abundant depth of challenge to the game.
Some skulls are easy to find while others require extensive searching or a guide to locate. For players interested in finding all 14 it can take quite some time. Here is a general guide to their locations along with the effects they have on gameplay.
14 Iron Skull
The Iron Skull is found at the beginning of the game on the Pillar of Autumn. The skull is hiding in the same room as the cryo-tank the Master Chief emerges from at the very beginning of the game. It’s behind a pyramid of purple containers in the back.
The Iron Skull makes death a little more meaningful. In co-op mode dying with this skull active will cause the players to reset back to the last saved checkpoint. In solo playthroughs, death will cause the player to restart at the beginning of the level. It’s a great way to make the game just a little harder.
13 Mythic Skull
This skull is found shortly after the player crashes onto the surface of the Halo — near the wreckage is a waterfall that can be seen, and to the right of the waterfall is the Mythic Skull lying on the ground.
The Mythic Skull makes the Covenant and Sentinel enemies in the game much stronger. The Covenant will have twice the amount of health they normally would, and Sentinels will now start carrying energy shields.
12 Boom Skull
The Boom Skull is located near the underground tunnel after the player crashes onto Halo. When the Warthog is dropped off by the Pelican the player normally heads into the trench. Instead, the player should follow the cliff edge on the right — where they’ll find the Boom Skull.
The Boom Skull can make for really chaotic and fun playthroughs. With the Boom Skull activated all explosions will now have twice the damage radius. This applies to any explosion from any source.
11 Foreign Skull
On the level Truth and Reconciliation is the Foreign Skull. It appears inside the Hangar Bay where the Pelican drops everyone off. On the far right side of the room is a set of doors where a pair of Hunters comes through. The door only opens when they’re near and the skull is on the other side of that door, so timing and understanding the spawn order are both crucial factors when it comes to obtaining it.
This skull causes the player to be unable to pick up or use Covenant weapons. It can make for fun Human-weapons-only playthroughs and it adds a bit of realism to the game.
10 Famine Skull
This Skull is found during the level Silent Cartographer. After the Pelican drops the player off they need to turn around and head the opposite direction of the initial insertion. There’s a small part of the island with a ramp and the skull sitting at the top. Later in the level, a Pelican can be found crashed nearby.
The Famine Skull causes all weapons dropped by the enemy or allies to have half the ammo they normally would. This causes a “famine” of ammo and makes the game a bit harder as players have to ration ammo and be more efficient with their kills.
9 Bandana Skull
On the Silent Cartographer level is the Bandana Skull. It’s found inside the security building where the control console is located. Inside the security building is a tunnel leading to an open room with a structure. The skull is on top of the structure and requires a grenade or rocket launcher jump to reach.
The Bandana Skull gives the player infinite ammo with any weapon in their possession. This allows the player to use powerful weapons with normally rare ammo types (like rocket launchers or sniper rifles) for most of the game.
8 Fog Skull
This appears during the level Assault on the Control Room. After crossing the bridge and taking the elevator down the skull is on a raised platform in the center of that descent. The player will need to use a grenade jump to reach the skull wreathed in fog.
The Fog Skull disables the motion tracker. It’s a subtle change that now requires the player to have visual situational awareness.
7 Malfunction Skull
This skull is found in the Assault on the Control Room level. Exiting a tunnel places the player in a large underground room. There’s a massive set of piping in the center of the gorge. The skull is hiding at the end of the main pipe overhanging the abyss.
The Malfunction Skull punishes the player for dying by disabling an aspect of the HUD every time they respawn. It’s a quirky feature that incentivizes the player to stay alive or lose critical information in battle.
6 Recession Skull
On the 343 Guilty Spark level, the player must enter the facility. Before entering the player will see an explosion and gunfire from the entryway. At this point the player should head left, following the back wall. There’s a turret standing in front of a small drop. At the bottom of that drop is the Recession Skull.
The Recession Skull causes every gun in the game to use twice the ammo. Melee attacks and high capacity weapons become more critical moving forward.
5 Black Eye Skull
In the Library level is the Index Chamber. Before going inside there’s a square opening the Flood use to swarm inside the building. The player can use a grenade jump to enter the vent closest to the door leading to the Index Chamber. The Skull will be here.
With the Black Eye Skull, shields will no longer recharge automatically the player must melee bash enemies to jumpstart it.
4 Eye Patch Skull
Also on the Library level is the Eye Patch Skull. When the player encounters the Index they need to hug the wall and follow it around behind the Index. The Skull will be waiting on the ground on the other side.
This Skull turns off the auto aim feature for all weapons. The player now must fire more accurately, making weapons like the Needler harder to use.
3 Pinata Skull
The Pinata Skull is on the level Two Betrayals. The Skull is sitting on the ledge above the tunnel that was used in Assault on the Control Room. The player needs to capture a Banshee, fly up, take out the Wraith and secure the skull.
The Pinata Skull causes enemies to drop grenades when they’re bashed with melee. The grenade that appears is relevant to the species, meaning Frag Grenades from UNSC humans and Plasma Grenades from Covenant.
2 Grunt Birthday Party Skull
This skull is found on The Maw level, where the Foehammer was shot down. The player needs to carefully position a Warthog near the railing on the side of the road. The player can then hop on the Warthog and onto the railing to get the Skull.
This amusingly morbid Skull causes Grunts to spout a burst of confetti when they’re killed with a headshot.
1 Grunt Funeral Skull
The Skull is immediately available to all players who pre-ordered Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition. If the player hasn’t obtained the game through a pre-order this Skull becomes impossible to obtain conventionally.
The Grunt Funeral Skull causes Grunts to explode in a fashion similar to Plasma Grenades when they die.
