Swapping Weapons in Borderlands 3 Changes PS5 DualSense Controller Colors

The PS5 DualSense controller seems to be one of the key aspects of next-generation gaming, thanks to its incredible haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that enhance the feeling of playing games. While it’s still an underutilized feature considering how the PS5 just launched, a bunch of  games has already started taking advantage of the DualSense controller’s unique, and that includes the popular looter-shooter Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 3 is one of those games that is all geared up for the release of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.  Gearbox recently revealed a new trailer for the game that lists out all the next-gen features including a 4-player split-screen co-op mode and a performance mode that offers 120 FPS, something that should entice the returning players who are looking to upgrade this holiday season.

While the performance tweaks are indeed noteworthy and will overhaul the game’s quality in a number of ways, the little adjustments such as the DualSense controller changing color while swapping weapons is also something that would appeal to many. Live Content Producer Mario Rodriguez recently took to Twitter to portray how Borderlands 3 takes advantage of the PS5 DualSense controller. As it turns out, the DualSense controller changes color when weapons are swapped. Additionally different elemental weapons offer different colors. For example, the DualSense LED glows orange when a fire weapon is equipped, and green for a corrosive weapon, and so on.

Borderlands 3 is not the first game to utilize the DualSense LED panel. In Resident Evil 3, the color of LED changes depending on the character’s health. For instance, it will glow green if Jill’s health is full, and it will turn yellow as her health turns to half, and ultimately it will glow red when her health hits rock bottom.  While the addition of LED is still a quality of life feature, it’s the adaptive triggers that are the real deal. In Bethesda’s upcoming first-person shooter Deathloop, the controller will actually block the triggers when the player’s weapon is jammed in the game. This feature could highly elevate the gameplay experience and will hopefully be utilized in future PS5 titles as well.

It’s interesting to see how third-party developers have already started taking advantage of the multitude of features the DualSense controller offers. This comes as a stark contrast to the DualShock 4 controller which featured a handy touchpad that remains underutilized by most third-party games even to date.

As Sony’s biggest strength continues to be its first-party lineups, it will be interesting to see how titles like God of War and Horizon Forbidden West utilize the potential the DualSense controller holds.

Borderlands 3 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
