Last month, Cyberpunk 2077 made headlines when CD Projekt Red announced that the game would be delayed for a third time. Of course, given that Cyberpunk 2077’s release has been pushed back numerous times, some fans were not happy with the development. Now, reports have revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 on the PC will not support ray tracing on AMD’s latest GPUs, at least at launch.
Recently, CD Projekt Red released the official PC requirements for the ray tracing feature on Cyberpunk 2077. Although NVIDIA stated last month that Cyberpunk 2077 would not have a proprietary NVIDIA ray tracing tech, some fans wondered why the studio only listed NVIDIA’s requirements and not AMD’s. In response to a tweet, CD Projekt Red’s Global Community Lead, Marcin Momot, revealed that the game would not support ray tracing on AMD at launch, but the studio is also working to include AMD as soon as possible.
At the moment, it is unclear why CD Projekt Red is locking Cyberpunk 2077’s ray tracing effects on NVIDIA’s GPUs. However, one possibility is that CD Projekt Red has a marketing deal with NVIDIA, which is why the feature will only be limited to NVIDIA’s hardware for the time being. Tech experts believe that, theoretically, ray tracing should also work fine on AMD’s GPUs, but that remains to be seen until Cyberpunk 2077 releases this December.
Speaking of the game’s release date, rumors have surfaced several weeks ago that Cyberpunk 2077 may suffer yet another delay that would push back the game’s launch to 2021. Given that the game has been delayed countless times, the rumor quickly caught players’ attention, especially those who have been anxiously waiting for Cyberpunk 2077’s release. It is worth noting that the rumors came from an established leaker who has previously predicted release dates and events in the video game industry.
Thankfully, CD Projekt Red released a statement shortly after the reports surfaced online, saying that Cyberpunk 2077 will release as scheduled. Of course, CD Projekt Red’s affirmation of the game’s December release date is definitely good news, especially since another delay would prove problematic for Cyberpunk 2077.
At the moment, CD Projekt Red’s stock value has dropped 25% since its peak in August, and financial analysts believe that this dip is caused by reports of crunch within the studio and the growing uncertainty of Cyberpunk 2077’s release. However, not all is doom and gloom in CD Projekt Red, given that financial experts also believe that the company’s stock will recover as soon as Cyberpunk 2077 is launched.
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release on December 10, 2020, for the PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
